The Frontier Woman— ‘Gypsy Housewife’ Likes to Clip Coupons for Free Travel Folders BT BLANCHE SPANN PEASE Oh goodness me. the weather is hot! Right when there is canning to do, and you have to have the stove going. These are the days 1 like to serve partly cold meals. Forecast today was for a hun dred in the shade so I planned a lunch of baked ham, buttered com. cherry-pecan gelatin salad, and so 1 wouldn’t have to cook potatoes at noon, I made a big dish of potato salad, enough for dinner and supper both. I baked pies in early morning and kept them chilled in the refrigerator. Yesterday I pulled a “foodea” that might interest some of the rest of you. In a baked pie shell, 1 put prepared chocolate pudding mix. but I used a half cup of strong coffee in place of that much milk. For a topping on a r pie I used marshmallow creme. You can buy marshmallow creme in jars and keep it in the refrigerator until it is all used up. Topping the creme 1 put crushed pecans that I crushed with a rolling pin. About 2 ta blespoons is enough for a pie, that's the measurement before crushing. Marshmallow creme is nice to use on prepared pudding mix which you use in sherbets, too. A teaspoonful is plenty for each serving. It is stiff when you spoon it out | keep it in the refrigerat or) but top the pudding with it a half hour before serving, and by then it will run down to dec orate the pudding. You can also use it between graham crackers, as a filling, and as topping for various other kinds of desserts. It’s handy to have around, decorates and gar nishes, particularly in that pinch when you have no cream to whip. An apple nut pudding is a del icacy you’ll enjoy serving your family and I’ll guarantee you they’ll call for seconds. You need % cup sugar, 1 well beaten egg, Vi cup enriched flour, Vi teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon bak ing powder, 1 cup finely chopped tart apples, Vi cup walnuts, chopped, and 1 teaspoon almond extract. Gradually add sugar to egg, beating until sugar is dis solved. Add sifted dry ingredi ents, stir in remaining ingredi ents. Pour into greased 8 inch ;quare pan. Bake in moderate even of 350 F. 35 to 40 minutes, serve with whipped cream. —tfw— \ t*ypsy Housewife Wins Subscription— Dear Mrs. Pease: This is the time of year when vriting can easily be pushed to he background for most of us ire busy at other things. Sometimes I think we complain mtwiardly about housecleaning vhen inwardly we enjoy it. Hard vork? Yes, of course, but after ill we chose homemaking as our ife’s work, didn’t we? We ex acted to work hard to make our ob a success. When the last slip over is on and the last curtain langs fresh and clean at the hining windows, and we sit back nd admire our freshly scrubbed, iainted, papered or whatever ooms, the satisfaction of accom 'lishment more than pays for the ore muscles we acquired doing he job and if we worked hard nough a few of those surplus •ounds we acquired during the azy winter days may have van shed with the collected smudges n walls and woodwork. Enough about housecleaning. am one of the lucky ones who as the job well done. The last paint brush is clean •d and pul away al our houu and from lislaning on lha party lino.
