JAMES C. OLSON Maj. J. W. Pearman, a pro minent territorial pioneer, de scribed 2 early Fourth of July celebrations in reminiscences of Nebraska City which he wrote for the old settlers association of Otoe county in 1873, and which are published in the “Proceed ings and Collections’’ of the Nebraska State Historical So ciety for 1907. The first took place in 1853, the year before Nebraska ter ritory was created. Pearman was at old Ft. Kearney (or what was left of it), and decided to try to attend an Independence day celebration being held across the Missouri river in Sidney la. The river was in flood, a condition wnicn samewnai compucaieu travel. . . But let Major Pearman tell it in his own words: “On July 4, Lafayette, Dun can, myself, and 7 Otoe Indians started for the highlands in Iowa in canoes. We left the foot of Main street early in the morning expecting to reach Sidney, la., by 10:30 a.m. in time to take part in the celebration of that place. We aimed to go through the heavy timber directly opposite the city, but after paddling our way for a few hours we found we could not get through on ac count of the driftwood afloat. "We sent the Indians back tied most of our clothing a round our neck, and started a foot for the Bluffs, a distance of about 8 miles, at which place we arrived about dark, travel ing in water from 2- to 8-feet deep. “We arrived at Sidney at 1 n.m. on the 5th to find the celebration all over and the people in bed.” The next year, Nebraska City held a Fourth of July celebration of its own. As Major Pearman de scribed the occasion: “The 4th of July being near at hand, it was determined to have a grand old barbecue, and every one set to work doing what they could to make it a success. Arbors for eating, speaking, and dancing were erected near where the Sev mour house now stands. Every body was invited far and near. There were at least one thousand persons present, Atchison coun ty, Mo., and Fremont county, la., furnishing most of the white peo ple, while our own locality fur nished many whites and a host of Indians. Dancing and eating com menced about 1 o’clock of the 4th and wound up by a ‘big Iniun’ dance on the evening of the 6th. "And be it said lo the credit of the earlier settlers of Otoe county, not a drunken man was seen nor were there any dis turbances of any kind during j this 3 days' barbecuing." Nebraska City, of course, was hardly an organized community at the time this first celebration was staged. Major Pearman con cluded his account with a state ment that illustrates most effec tively the character of those ear ly territorial pioneers. “The glorious old Fourth hav ing passed off to the satisfaction of all concerned,” he stated, “the i town proprietors thought it about time to commence the work cf building up a great city on the | west bank of the mighty Mis | souri.” ATKINSON NEWS Mrs. Frank LeMunyan accom panied her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Douglas, Glen da, Leila and Lanny. of Lennox, la., to their home Saturday morn ing where she will visit for a few weeks.
