The annual Sunday - school Christmas program will be given Elgin Drops 2 by Narrow Margin CLEARWATER — This week the first standings of the mem bers of the Sandhills Gateway conference are available as a re result of the three conference games played last week. Elgin was the victim of two nan-row squeaks, dropping one contest to Oakdale, 25-23, and an other to Orchard, 27-26. In the other league contest, Clearwater routed Brunswick, 54-30. In that Elgin - Oakdale game, Wagner led his mates in the scor ing column by tallying 13 points, seven of them were made on as many free throws attempts. Heit hoff and Keil hit eight points each for Elgin. Clearwater trailed the Bruns wick Bluejays, 8-7, at the first quarter but rallied in the second period to force a halftime lead, 22-16. The Brunswick boys lost their basket eyes during the third and the Cardinals ran away. Bar rett led Clearwater by hitting 26 points. In the third conference lilt. The game was close most of the way although the Elgin lads led at several stages. In non-conference games, Brun swick lost to a strong Inman club, 61-32. Hartigan, of Inman, hit 24 points for Inman Tigers while controlling both backboards. Meanwhile, Chambers took a lac ing from Butte, 51-20. The Butte club rolled up an early lead and was never threatened. Clearwater Cardinals rolled on their undefeated way by thresh ing Center, 75-34. This week Oakdale travels to Hoskins, Chambers plays at Os mond in an Elkhom valley con test, St. Boniface, of Elgin, trav els to Brunswick, Clearwater vis its a strong Meadow Grove team. The O’Neill amateurs' will take on the College All-Stars, a crowd of ex-prep greats that will be as sembled for the holiday classic. Game will be played at 8 p. m., in the O’Neill public school gym. The All Stars will be led by Bob Berigan, former St. Joe (Atkinson) all-stater and now a member of the University of St. Louis basketball team. Other performers will be: Dean Keat ing (former Atkinson high star), now University of Colorado; Bob Mack (formerly St. Joe), now Wayne State; Bill Miller (for merly St. Joe), now Creighton university; Eddie Campbell (for merly St. Mary’s), now Creighton university; Vic Faust (formerly St. Joe), now University of Nebraska; Pat Miller (former ly St. Joe), now Wayne State and playing manager, and Louie Wevel (former St. Joe and for mer St. Benedict college, Kans., star). Page Quintet Downs Ewing PAG El—The Page Eagles turn ed in their second Elkhorn valley conference win of the season by defeating a stubborn Ewing five by a score of 32-27. The victory was not assured until the last 30 seconds when Bob Sorensen, game captain, potted a one-hand ed field goal from sidecourt. The contest was a see-saw battle throughout with 32 fouls being called. Page’s offense was led by Le Roy Least, who acquired 10 points. Good and Knapp paced the way for Ewing by each scor ing 10 points. In the preliminary, Page edged Ewing 25-23. Game Captain Bill Zempel tallied a fie Id goal with less than 15 seconds playing time remaining. Dick Christon and Vir ; gil Parks paced the way by each scoring 8 points. They lampooned St. Mary’s academy Cardinals, 39-26, Friday night in the public school audi torium. It was the season’s open er for the Eagles and the second setback in that many starts for the Red-and-White. Lanky Ted Lindberg, O’Neill center, was bottled up by the Cards but Don Godel, unmolest ed on the side, peppered the ring for 26 points. The Eagles held the upperhand most of the way but couldn’t forge 'ahead until the final peri od when Godel worked up a full head of steam—hitting six field ers with hardly a miss. Dean’s kids had trouble get ting their offensive going against the underdog Cards. It was O’Neill high’s first triumph over the Bulldogs in the cage arena since 1947. Coach Howard Dean started Ted Lindberg at center, Davey Eby and Don Godel at forwards, , Don Calkins and Clifford Dick at guards. Strong reserve support was furnished by Gary Buck master at forward. The defensive work of Lind berg, Calkins and Dick showed well against the potent visitors. Godel collected 15 points and Lindberg 14 to pace the Blues’ at tack. Osborn, of Ainsworth, scored eight.
