Payton Confesses
Outlaw Robbery —
Elmer Lee Payton, who used
the alias Jim Smith, has been ap
prehended in Charleston, W.
Va., and has admitted looting
the New Outlaw grocery in O’
Neill on March 27.
He also may have been in
volved in six Valentine robber
ies and one at Stuart about the
same time while headquartering
in O’Neill.
Deputy Holt Sheriff A1 Sipes
accompanied the Brown county
sheriff to Charleston. Sipes ad
vised County Attorney William
W. Griffin late Wednesday by
telephone that Payton had ad
mitted the O’Neill robbery. The
FBI, he said, had cooperated in
the case.
