Plans were made for demon
strating and judging at follow
ing meetings. We received some
interesting pointers on how to
judge.
We were happy to have a

Reports on the annual ban
quet, and plans for the western
regional rural youth conference
will be made at the regular
meeting of the O’Neill rural
youth Friday, May 12, begin
ning at 8 p. m.
The regional youth confer
ence was slated to be held at
Curtis and the O’Neill club
plans to send two delegates.
George Mellor, club president,
will preside at the meeting. Rob
ert Martens will be in charge of
the program.
Mrs. Bridget Swanson cele
brated her 67th birthday anni
versary by being confirmed on
that day. Three of her grand
sons were also in the class,
Gordon Slaight, James Richter
and Ronniv Ross also a niece,

CHAMBER MEET
U. S. 20 and Farm - to -
Market Highways Draw
Attention
The everlasting road topic
dominated Tuesday’s meeting
of the Chamber of Commerce
at which 22 members were
present.
Most of the discussion sur
rounded U. S highway 20 and
the progress of the new high
way 20 association, and1 some
discussion was carried on in
connection with certain farm
to-market roads, notably the
Opportunity road and a pro
posed improvement in Grattan,
, Emmet and Sheridan townships.
President Melvin Ruzicka pre
sided. A. P, Jaszkowiak report
ed on the Holt county athletic
banquet and James W. Rooney,
secretary, made a report on the
Nebraska Stock Growers’ sec
tional meeting. Both were giv
en votes of thanks for success
ful conduct of both affairs.
Rooney also read the Cham
ber’s financial statement and
announced that new officers
will be elected at the June
meeting.
Until Tuesday O'Neill (like
Atkinson, Stuart and several
other points) had not actively
participated in the formation
of the new U. S. Highway 20
association.
President Ruzicka was in
structed to appoint a commit
tee to formulate a Highway 20
chapter here. Expected to take
a lead in the move will be high
way service stations, hotel, cab
in camp, cafe and garage oper
ators.
Dues are based on population
of the town at 10-cents per cap
ita. Eric G. DeFlon, of Chadron,
is president and Chet Allen, al
so of Chadron, is secretary.
Dr. W. F. Finley reviewed the
highway 20 story from its be
ginning until the present day.
New association plans to es
tablish a travel bureau in Sioux
City to induce tourists and oth
er traffic over the route. Fifty
thousand maps will be printed.
No money is being expended
until the total budget is raised.
Possibility of development of
a farm-to-market road west 9
miles from the Andy Clark
place was discussed. This would
include 1 mile in Grattan town
ship, 6 miles in Emmet town
ship and 2 miles in Sheridan
township.
Next meeting will feature an
election of officers. Terms ex

DELOIT — On Tuesday, May
2, the Farm Bureau held a meet
ing at the Anton Shavhk home.
This is a new unit, called the
Clearwa.ej; Valley Farm Bur
au. There are over 20 mem
ers. The meeting was post
poned about 4 months on ac
count of weather and roads.
There is much water in evid
ence in the west country even
yet.
A discussion on taxes was
part of the evening’s program.
The next meeting will be at the
James McDonald home on June
5. Ewald Spahn will be present
to tell of his recent trip to Eu
rope.
A representative of the farm
bureau was in this community
last week writing insurance.
