O'Neill-Valentine Line * Improvement Slated_ The board of directors of Consumers Public Power dis trict, in session at Norfolk on Friday, June 24, authorized R. L. Schacht, general manager, to contract with an engineer ing firm for preliminary work on the new 115,000-volt tran mission line between O’Neill and Ainsworth. I Mr. Schacht reported that laying out the line and other preliminary engineering work could get under way within two weeks after the contract was approved. He also report ed that sufficient materials can be obtained promptly. The new 115.000-volt line will be constructed with dou ble-pole structures and suspen- ' sion type conductors which will withstand the severest storms and the line will be shielded for protection against lightning damage, which has been a major hazard to trans mission lines in this area. The new line will transmit additional power from the main network of the Nebraska Public Power system into the Western portion of the O’Neill Valentine network to provide a more dependable feeder into the area. The board also approved an expenditure of $6,936 for a pole inspection and rehabilita tion of 37 miles of transmis sion line in the Bassett-Atkin son area. Mr. Sch^cht said this includes the tightening and re pairing of all pole structures on the line and making any general repairs necessary due to the poundings of the severe snow storm experienced dur ing the recent months. This permanent line im provement was decided upon after the idea to move the O’ Neill deisel powered generator to Valentine was abandoned.
