A minimum of 4 500 tons is
required. This figure will be
de imtely altained by Octob

and British plans.
By that date, the necessary
transport planes, personnel, and
ground iacilitics will be in op

at least 4,500 tons of supplies

The program calls for the U.

Wry Jest
When it enacted the Europ
ean recovery program, congress
wrote into the law an unwit
ting wry jest on W. Averell
Harriman. The gangling form
er secretary of commerce is
ambassador-at-large in Europe
in the administration of the
act. His official title, as speci

is "United States special rep

The initials of that title are

for the Union of Soviet Social

Farm Income High
Despite the tapering off of
i grain prices, total farmer in
come this year will approxim
ate 1947's record of $30,500,
000.000
Following the commodity -
market break last Spring,
government experts were
fearful of a marked slump
in farmer income. The fears
were needless.
Preliminary statistics show
that grower income will be a
little less, if any. than last
year’s record-smashing peak.
That’s good news in the na
tional economic picture. It
means no falling o'f in the vi
tal segment of farmer buying.
And when the farmer bu.Vs
freely, industrial activity stay
high.

Exudes Optimism
Adverse polls and political
reports are having no effect on
President Truman. He contin
ues to exude complete confi
dence that he will win.
When a senate friend called
at the White House, the Presi
dent lost no time in asking him
to make some campaign
speeches for him.
“It’s going to be tough go
ing” the senator said.
"It's always tough going
in a fight," Mr. Truman re
torted cheerfully. "But I
want to tell you one thing. I
can still beat Dewey. I can
take him, and I'm going to
take him. He's got some sur
prises in store for him."
Comment by Rep. Edward
Hebert, rabid Dixiecrat from
Louisiana: "The trouble with
Harry Truman is that he takes
his own advice.”
* * *
SJecret Ambition
President Truman has a sec
ret ambition.
He revealed it to Tappan
Gregory and Joseph Stetcher,
American Bar association of
ficial, during their White House
call.
“You know.” the President
said, “I studied law two years.
Then I helped make law for a
number of years as a senator.
Now, as Chief Executive, I am
enforcing the law.
"In fact,” he added wistful
ly, “I feel qualified to be ad
mitted to the bar. I think I’d
make a pretty good lawyer.”

Upsetting the Applecart
CIO chiefs have inside word
that the indictment of the 12
Communist party leaders has
thrown a monkey wrench into
Leftists’ plans to set up a na
tional labor organization.
The secret scheme was to
pull certain Communist-con
trolled unions out of the CIO
as the nucleus for a new
outfit. Among these unions
are the electrical workers,
the office and professional
workers, the mine, mill and
smelfer workers and the to
bacco and agricultural work
ers. ,
This planned ‘"walkout” was
in line with Communist tactics
in other countries, where sep
arate labor organizations are
being set up.
But apparently, the conspir
acy indictments raised hob with
the scheme in the U. S. and
they pulled in their horns.
