Ewing Nips Rockets 3-2 in 12 Innings O’Neill Club Handed First Reversal of the Season in Holt League Play By a Staff Writer The big news of the week in baseball circles in these parts was Ewing’s lampooning of the O'Neill Rockets 3-2. The Rockets were all-victorious thus far in Holt county league play until they met their Waterloo on the Ewing playground on Sunday, July 18. Meanwhile. Paqe also took it on the chin, dropping a 5-8 decision to a visitinq Atkinson aggregation. The Stuart-Chambers meeting wfas a no-show affair. In Chambers where baseball hopes were high early in the season the club officials couldn't muster 9 men for a scheduled game at Stuart. Thus, Chambers was obliged to forfeit. Ewing 3; O'Neill 2 EWING—The high-riding O’ Neill Rockets were jolted 3 2 by Ewing Sunday in their first setback of the season in Holt county league play. Twelve in nings were required to settle the dispute, which was waged on more-or-less even terms un til the decisive final frame. The Rockets, who seldom this season have scored less than 10 points per game, tal lied in the sixth and ninth in nings. Ewing bunched 3 hits in the seventh, tying the game at 3 all. First Baseman A. Kropp launched the Ewing seventh inning spurt with a double. Third Baseman R. Boelter came up with a single, and Second Baseman D. Jensen singled, scoring Kropp and Boelter. k O'Neill came close to win ning the game in the 10th when Big Ed Schmidt, left fielder, tried to stretch a double into a triple and was tagged in the process. Center Fielder Darrell Bright struckout, but First Baseman Maynard Morrow singled. Schmidt might have scored the winning run if he had been on base. Ewing fashioned the winning tally by capitalizing on O’Neill misques. Jensen, first man up in the 12th, got on by virtue of an error on O’Neill’s Schmidt, who roamed from left field into deep center field to take a fly but dropped the ball. Right Fielder Sheets got a single, advancing Jensen to second. Clem Shrad, Ewing pitcher, grounded to Pitcher Danny Helmer, who wanted a double-out but lacked cooper ation at second. Boll witt flied out to First Base man Morrow. Next man up, Catcher J. Podany, turned the trick. On 4 previous trips to the plate, Mr. Helmer had set him down via the strikeout route. Not this time. He con nected on a clean single that brought Mr. Jensen in with the winning tally. The large crowd, comprised mainly of Ewingites, went wild. The Schrad vs. Helmet pitching duel was in the form of a fast ball vs. a curve ball. Schrad was gropving them in high and through the middle and Helmer was working hard on his fast breaks. Helmer struckout 16 and Schrad set down 17. Some of the Rockets were unhappy with Earl Billings’ umpiring behind the plate, but in no way did their grievenees with the officials detract from Schrad’s neat job of pitching. Atkinson 8; Page 5 PAGE—A bushel basket of errors defeated Page Sunday as Atkinson copped a Holt league game 8-5. The Page crew was gunning hard for a win but 7 infield errors, most of them at John R. Gallagher Attorney-al-Law Fiasi Nat'l Bank Bldg. O'Neill s Phone 11 inopportune times, proved too costly. Three misques each were charged against Shortstop Larson and Third Baseman Bob Appleby and 1 was as sessed against Second Base man Fred Appleby. Jerry Troshynski, hurling for Atkinson, struckout 3 and walked 7. Darrell Graham, of Page, yielded only 4 hits while striking out 6 and walking 1 in 6 innings. He was replaced by Lloyd Cork, who gave up only 2 hits in 3 innings and struckout 3. Thus, in the pitching department the Page team was well represented. Fred Appleby connected safe ly on 3 out of 5 trips to lead the Page offensive, but A.tkin son's Hob Berigan, a substitute at shortstop, hit safely tw’ice in 2 tries for a perfect day at bat.
