By BLANCHE SPANN PEASE
Hi there, all you nice people!
Got the house cleaning all
done? Do you have those
Gladiolius planted yet? Oh! Oh!
you haven’t. Lady bustle right
out and get some of them plan
ted, you can plant some each
week until June 1 and you 11
have glads until late in the
Fall that way.
Are any of you lucky people
having fried chicken on the
menu as yet? A fitting ending
for a menu of fried chicken,
new creamed potatoes and
green peas is strawberry short
cake, now at the peak of its
seasonial popularity. Give it
a new twist by making an en
riched flour scone batter and
pouring into a greased 9-inch
ring mold. When baked, un
mold and fill the center with
sugared crushed strawberries.
Garnish the top and sides with
whole be it i os for a May day
feast.

In making yeast breads
of all types, use a lightly
floured board. All of the
flour needed for making a
batch of dough is added
when the dough is made.
Flour added after this stage,
coming from excess e* a
floured board, makes dark
streaks in bread and pro
duces a coarse texture.
Kneading on a pastry cloth,
canvas or coarse linen towel
makes a moderately soft
dough easy to handle.

Sweet topping for coffee
cakes and rolls is provided
by a confectioners sugar icing.
Add enough top milk, cream
or fruit juice to confectioners
sugar to give it the thickness
of whipping cream. Then add
a dash of salt and a drop or

or anv other desired flavoring,
can be chosen to suit the par
ticular baked product. Since
there is a good supply of hon
ey available now. a honey top
ping may be used to advan
tage. Cream together one half
cup of margarine or butter and
1 Vi cups of confections sugar.
Add an unbeaten egg white
Mix until creamy. Brush rolls
with honey topping as soon as
shaped. This recipe makes one
and one fourth cup of honey,
and Vt cups of honey topping
' or enough for 48 three inch
rolls, or for nine two inch
coffee cakes.

Sandwiches are always in
season. Favorites among wo
men for serving with spring
salads are assorted finger
sandwiches. Some are bread
and butter, some are filled
with egg salad and deviled
ham, some are flavorful cheese.
For heartier appetites, make
double deckers, with vegetable
filling in the other layer.

Mrs. Harold Milnar, of At
kinson, wins a 3 months’ sub
scription to The Frontier with
the following letter.
Dear Mrs. Pease:
Was surprised, but very
pleased when we receive^
some late editions of The Fron
tier and noticed your column.
Have enjoyed your articles for
many years in other papers and
envy your talent at writing.
Oh, it such a lovJly Spring
day, makes one feel like mo
ving out the heating stove
and cleaning all those dusty
corners. Why am I sitting
writing then?
Really I can accomplish more
after a short rest after lunch
and don’t you believe every
mother and homemaker should
take off her shoes and rest too
while the baby rests. Never
sleep myself but after reading
a short story and writing a few
lines to a friend, the rest of
the household tasks seem much
easier.

100 years of service! We of the Northwestern are proud
of this record; pleased to point to our growth from a few
miles of strap-rail line with a single locomotive, to a 9,600
mile rail network servirp' nine states.
But we know well that the real credit for our progress
must go to you, the traveler, the shipper, the farmer ... to
the generations in your family and community who had
faith in this railroad, who stood with us through hard
times and good in the realization that community de
velopment and good transportation go hand in hand. So
in marking our 100th birthday, our thanks are to you—
whose vision and assistance have made this event possible.

FULL DRESS RECEPTION COMMITTEE . . .
In just about every city whenever a visiting
dignitary comes to town, the mayor and his
distinguished civic cohorts feel it necessary
to bedeck themselves in full dress and silk
toppers to meet their guest. This quaint
custom, generally involving many hot collars
and perspiring foreheads, becomes much sim
pler in the Antarctic where there are only
penguins to do the receiving. Like this
committee of well-dressed penguins which
rushed out to greet a U.S. navy Sikorsky
helicopter, part of Task Force 39, when it
landed somewhere in the Antarctic.
QUICK ONE EGG CAKE
One and a half cups cake
flour, Vi teaspoon salt, 2 tea
spoons baking powder, two
thirds cup sugar, 11 cup melted
shortening or salad oil, 1 egg,
cup milk, l - teaspoon van
illa extract. Sift dry ingred
ients, add cooled shortening.
Add egg beaten with milk and
vanilla, beat well by hand 1
minute. Bake in waxed paper
lined 8 inch square pan in mod
erate oven of 350 F. 25 to 30
minutes. It is good frosted or
served with your favorite lem
on filling or sauce. We like
it for short cake, it is much
richer.
Here's a little houseclean
ing hint, perhaps you've
heard many times, but be
lieve it's worth mentioning.
When cleaning walls with a
duster, use up motion, lift
ing the dust off. rather than
a down ward motion. The
downward motion tends to
settle the dust into the wall
paper or painted walls.
My rest period is over and
my 22-months-old daughter is
1 thinking up something new tu
| do so she can spend the re_
mainder of her afternoon “out
side”. Yesterday when brought
in for lunch she wanted to
! bring in her sand pail and
shovel with "gravey” (gravel
and sand) in the house.
Keep up your swell column.
A reader,
MRS. HAROLD MILNAR,
Box 21, Atkinson.

Mrs. Milnar. I'm just ever
so glad you wrote a letter
to The Frontier, and I know
your letter has brought plea
sure and help to the many
others who read it in this
issue. I do indeed think every
mother should rest when she
can.

Here’s a tip on glads. Dip
all glads before planting. One
well known Glad grower pre
fers one ounce of New Impro
ved Ceresan, three teaspoons
of Dreft, three gallons of wa
ter. Soak ten to fefteen min
utes but no longer. Stir sev
eral times. Soak bulblets thir
ty minutes if in shell, if sprot
ed or peeled, just ten to fifteen
minutes. Drain and plant at
I once. Lysol dip is also good
] but not as effective as New
Improved Ceresan. Use I Vi tea
spoon lysol per gallon of water.
Soak for 3 hours. Drain and
plant at once.
Cultivate frequently enough
to keep soil loose and free
from weeds, 2 inches is deep
enough and will not disturb
j the roots. After the fourth or
fifth leaf shows, it is necessary
to keep the soil moist to de
velop good blooms. A heavy
watering every week or ten
days is better than frequent
light sprinklings.
