When You and I Were Young —
Spark from Pipe Sets Coat
Ablaze for Pedestrian
60 YEARS AGO 4
March 29, 1888
A rather oldish looking man
was walking north towards the
courthouse Wednesday after
noon. The wind was blowing
rather hard and the gentleman
did not notice a spark of fire
which flew from his pipe and
caught on his overcoat. His
coat was soon all ablaze and in
a few moments the man would
have been badly burned him
self had not George Jones ran
up and threw his own coat ov
er the surprised man and
smothered the fire.
What O’Neill needs and what
she should have right away is a
system of street lamps. On a
dark night a stranger can hard
ly find his way along the
crowded thoroughfare.
The quacking goose and
the cooing duck is abroad in
the land and the festive hun
ter is as usual walking 10
miles through mud and slush
only to catch a faint glimpse
of the fair creature as he
soars high up into the heav
ens out of gun shot and
smiles down on his would
be slayer.
Charles Moore went to Cham
bers last week and brought to
O’Neill George Summerville
the stage driver who was so
badly frozen in the January
blizzard. Drs. Connolly and
Eisaman performed an opera
tion on his feet and he is get
ting along “reasonably well.”
The St. Louis grocery com
pany is putting in a large groc
ery house in O’Neill, to com
mence April 1. They have
rented Ed Hershiser’s building
and will make this town a dis
tributing point and will sup
ply everything in the grocery
line to all the north and north
west country, as well as Holt
county.
March 31, 1898
Last Friday, Rev. N. S. Low
rie went around town with a
subscription paper collecting
funds to be sent to the starv
ing Cubans. He met with good
success and in a short time
raised $55.80.
The 13-year old son of Si
Buck, who lives near Ewino.
was k’lled by an accidental
d scharge of a gun yesterday.
It appears that the boy was
out with the hired man af
ter hay. having with him one
of the old type muzzle load
ers. which he was in the ha
bit of carrying when away
from home. The gun was
loaded but to ward against
accidents a cap was never
put on until he was ready to
use it. The boy picked it up
from the wagon and had the
muzzle with a few inches of
his face when it discharged,
blowing the whole lop of his
head off.
Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Jas.
Connolly, residing south of
town, on Sunday morning,
March 27. a son. Jim says ev
erything is progressing nicely,
except a slight inconvenience
in the selection of a name to
compare favorably with the di
mensions of the young lad. He
is the picture of his dad in ev
ery particular.
Az Perry was in town Mon
day. He returned from Om
aha Saturday evening and says
the road is a sure go. The in
corporators expect to have the
nroposed route between At
kinson and Butte surveyed next
week. They will then be bet
ter able to estimate the cost.
Az went up to Atkinson Mon
day night.
March 19, 1923
George Davies and Jay But
ler, of Inman, were before the
county board last Tuesday ask
ing that the board designate a
certain road which runs along
the railroad track from Inman
to Stafford as a county high
way. The county board com
plied. This road is on the line
of the Blue Pole highway
across the state and will bring
many tourists through Inman.
The residence on the Pat
Welsh farm northwest of O’
Neill was totallv destroyed by
fire about 4 o’clock last Tues
day morning. The cause of the
fire is unknown
Chauncey Porter and family
expect to move to the Kauff
man residence just west of the
E. F. Porter residence, in the
east part of town.
March 25 was the second
birthdav anniversary of Miss
^ose Mary and Miss Ruth Ann.
the twin daughters of Mr. and
Mrs. W. J Bighn. A special
dinner was prepared for the
occasion and each young lady
was presented with a dainty
cake upon which were 2 can
