Feted at Shower
AMELIA—Mrs. Gale Fix was
the recipient of many gifts at a
post-nuptial shower December
13 at the home of Mrs. John
Mohr, who was assisted by Mrs.
Vernon Sparks and Mrs. Gertie
Adair.
The Misses Gloria Ott and
Margie Ann Sammons prepared
the program and entertainment.
After the gifts were presented,
the hostesses served reiresh
ments of sandwiches, cranberry
salad, pickles and coffee.

AMELIA—The Helping Hand
club met December 11. with
Mrs. B. W. Waldo. There were
17 members and four visitors
present As this was the Christ
mas party, the members ex
changed gifts. Mrs. Lee Sam
mons and Mrs Elmer Coolidge
planned the entertainment.
The members adjourned to
meet on January 9 with Mrs.
Eamie White.
Goes South lor Winter —
AMELIA—Mrs. Etta Ott took
the train from O’Neill on De
cember 14 bound for Shreve
port, La., where she will spend
the rest of the winter with her
daughter, Mrs. Burton Kiltz, and
family. Her departure was
marked with a supper at the
Harry Otto home in O’NeiU, at
tended by Mr. and Mrs. Blake
Ott and Gloria, Mr. and Mrs.

ENIWETOK — ATOMIC BASE
When U. S. navy dive-bom
bers operated over the bleak,
Jap-held Pacific atoll of Eni
wetok (above) no one in the
world was aware of the destiny
in store for that little isle. It
was impossible to know that
Eniwetok one day would be
made the world’s most impor
tant “proving ground” for
atomic energy experiments.
Construction of facilities and
installations for the purpose ot
developing and testing atomic
weapons is now under way on
Eniwetok. The army, navy
and air forces are working to
gether on the project.
ANIMAL HEROES
Mickey and Sparky, the cat
and dog, respectively, were de
corated by the SPC5A for sav
ing 28 persons from possible
death by gas in a Brooklyn
apartment house.
Trailer Settlement
at Amelia Disbands
AMELIA—The tiailer camp
here, which has been home for
highway workmen and their
families for the past few
months, has been disbanded.
With most of the work on
highway 11 completed, the
construction people have mov
ed on, most of them going to
Sioux City.
This tiny southwestern Holt
community notices the loss of
the transient workers and
their families.

Influenza Victims
AMELIA — An epidemic of
influenza struck the Amelia
school unusually hard one day
last week when there were 17
absentees in addition to the two
teachers.
Depart for West Coast —
AMELIA — Mrs. Mamie Sam
mons, of Amelia, and Mrs. Lillie
Weller, of Atkinson, departed
last week for an extended visi*
in the West. They will visit
Portland, Ore., before going on
to California to visit their sis
ter.
Arriving Sunday for the holi
days from Niles, O., were Mr.
Mrs. A1 Leibert. who are
visiting Mrs. Leibert’s parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Orville Peterson,
until Friday.

Bjornsen’s Hand
Patched with Skin
LYNCH—Lee Bjornsen is
recovering in the Methodist
hospital in Sioux City from a
cornpicking accident in which
he was a recent victim.
While operating a mechani
cal picker, large segments of
skin was scraped from his left
hand. A skin grafting treat
ment is now underway.
Bjornsen considers himself
lucky, however, as he says he
might easily have lost his arm
and fingers.

Sullivan, Sunday. Don Ridge
way, who was recently discharg
ed from the Navy, accompanied
Mr. Sullivan home to visit his
parents. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Ridge

entertained a few families at a
card party December 12. Those

Dean Coe has rented the
Methodist parsonage and expects
to live there until Mr. and Mrs.
Lloyd Waldo are able to move
into their new house, and then
he will move into the house va
cated by the Waldos. Mr. Coe
works for Guy Blake.
Doc Clemens has purchased a
110-volt light plant and has it
installed in his shop.
Bob Adair went to Cody De
cember 13, working on a ranch
near there.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Doolittle
attended a family reunion of
Mrs. Doolittle’s relatives in At
kinson December 12.
Mrs. Ed White and Mrs. Elmer
Coolidge were O’Neill shoppers
December 15.
Mrs. Lindsey and Florence
went to Norden December 14,
returning the next day. They
visited at the P. L. Strenger
home. Mrs. E. A. White was
storekeeper while they were
gone.
Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Edwards
and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Butter*
field attended a dinner in honor
of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Butter
field’s 38th wedding anniversary.
The dinner was given at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. Ray
mond Hoxsie, in O’Neill.
