became the champion of the 23d
annual O’Neill Country club in
vitational golf tournament.
He defeated Gene McKenna,
of O’Neill, 6-4 in the finals of the
championship flight.
McKenna was the surprise
performer of the tourney. He
scored upsets at every turn by
spilling Van Norman, of Bas
sett. in the first round; A. P.
("Scovie") Jaszkowiak, of O'
Neill, a preioumey favorite, in
the second round, and Gus
Caldwell, of Albion, in the
semifinals, 4-3.

the first 13 holes in the title

from the start.
In Sunday’s qualifying round,
Dr. Paul W. Tipton, of Omaha,
the 1946 champion, and A1 Mon

out of the city, and Joseph L.
McCarville, of O’Neill, defeated
Gordon Hiatt, also of O’Neill.
Tipton Ousted
During Monday afternoon’s
second-round play, Cadwell

him the edge over McCarville,
Golden disposed of Mongerson
one-down, and McKenna upset
Jaszkowiak.
In Tuesday morning semifinal
play, McKenna ousted Cadwell,
and Golden defeated Lightner
one-up.
A gallery congregated for
the title match, but Golden's
consistently good golf built an
early edge that was never en
dangered seriously.
Pat Harty, of O’Neill, grabbed
second flight honors by defeating
Ed Campbell, jr., of O’Neill, 3-1.
Highlight of the meet was the
showing of the O’Neill college
set, headed by McKenna, Bill
Grady and Ed Campbell, jr., who
forewarned the oldsters of things
to come. In the same youth
