LINCOLN—It may be OK for the veterans to remind us 1 of what the country owes them, ! but by the same token they should remember that they owe the country something, as pat- ; riots who have gone before j them remembered. * • * The season’s gush, the pious mouthings repeated a thousand j times, the lofty ideals that are pRAIRIELAND TAT Route 5 ... A 200 thousand dollar monu ment in honor of the various j tribes that once made up the Sioux nation is being planned to be erected near Chadron. I never thought much of monu ments, cast in cold bronze or solid rock, nor would I know whether the once crafty Sioux would either scorn or accept such a paleface tribute. * * * Out there hung low in the southeastern heavens may be seen an hour before dawn the matchless celestial charm of— all the year—December’s morn ing star, brilliant with the glow of a far distant sun, outstand ing among the small dots of light nearby like the bright beams from an electric bulb among candles. Earth is given a view of this $tar in its full glory only at this season. Tri-State Hatchery & Produce — O’NEILL — County Agent Stewart of Center reports a catch of 800 coyotes in Knox county since last April, 500 of these credited to the skill of Emlin Smith, a government hunter. .The “last of a hated race” dies hard. The breed is encountered ev erywhere in prairieland. The coyote population of Holt coun ty is anybody’s guess. Driving from Omaha to Lin j coin on a recent night a full grown (and large one, at that) crossed the highway just in front of us, his shaggy coat showing white in the glare of the car lights. As we have trav eled the highways leading be yond prairieland, mountains and valleys, mesa and desert were strangely silent of animal and bird life. • * * The new congress plans to throw a lasso over the CIO and AFL. New I^ove Library Recalls Opening of Original in 1895 ! -_ Students at the University of Nebraska this year are using thq new Don L. Love Memorial library, probably the most ad vanced sturcture of its kind in the country. Just 51 years ago this week, on December 10, 1895, the university opened an other new library. That build ing (the “old library” to many student generations) caused as much rejoicing a half-century ago as Love Memorial does to day, according to James C. Ol son, superintendent of the Ne braska State Historical society, in his current press release en titled, “Out of Old Nebraska.” There is a tremendous con trast between the old building and the new. but in 1895 the Not only for the brief Holiday Season but every day of the New Year may flood fortune be with you. Chancellor MacLean was quoted in the Lincoln Evening Call as stat ing that the distinguishing fea ture of the building was, “its modern air, as contrasted with the antique or manastic atmos phere of other similar institu I tions.” What’s more, it was fitted out with those new-fangled electric lights, and a ventilating fan in the attic, which, it was prom ised, would change the air in the building at least once ev ery 15 minutes. The reception given by the Chancellor at the opening of the building was a gala affair, attended by Gov. Silas Hol comb, the regents of the uni versity, state officials, and oth ! - er prominent citizens from all over the state. There was no set program, although, accord ing to The Hesperian, student publication, ‘‘In Prof. Fling’s rooms ices were served to all who came and in the reading room tea was prepared for all who desired it.” Every effort was made in planning for the library “to conserve the modem policy of departmental library work,” and emphasis was placed upon “the convenient department laboratories.” That library served many more functions than its name implies. In addition to its col lection of books, it housed classrooms, laboratories, the State Historical society, an art gallery, and studios for the art department. The building still stands on the university campus, and whatever comments may have been directed toward its archi tecture in recent years, in 1895 it was looked upon as a “splen did addition to the architecture of the capital city.” ROYAL THEATRE O'NEILL FRIDAY 8e SATURDAY DEC. 27-28 Big Double Bill Carole Landis and Allyn Joslyn in It Shouldn’t Happen To A Dog —ALSO— Cuban Pete with Desi Arnaz and his Orchestra, Ethel Smith, The King sisters, Beverly Sim mons, and Don Porter.
