Eagles Claw Out 19-0 Win Over Bassett
Both Teams Sluggish,
Spectators Swelter as
as Sun Bears Down
The O’Neill Eagles soared to a
39-0 triumph over the Bassett
Tigers Friday afternoon on the
Bassett grid.
The Eagles and 01’ Sol collabo
rated in turning on the heat. Sol
worked all afternoon to the dis
advantage of both teams, but the
Eagles clawed out a counter in
the second period, and from then
on the outcome was never ques
tioned. Even the spectators swelt
ered as the mercury rose to the
high 80s.
Both machinnB were sluggish
and listless during the opening
stanza. The Tigers pounced on
an O’Neill fumble on O’NeiH's 8,
but could not capitalize on the
break. The shortlived threat
ended on the O’Neill 20, Bassett
having suffered two yardage
losses, and then losing the ball
on a fumble.
Early in the second stanza,
Halfback Dick Tibbetts hustled
the ball 55 yards in returning a
punt to Bassett’s 20. In a short
series of plays, Fullback Ray
Calkins squirmed through t o
score from the 6
The second O’Neill counter
came early in the fourth. After
a sustained 50-yard drive, Tib
betts skirted end from the 9 to
score.
The third marker came several
minutes later after a 65-yard
drive. Halfback Dick Hunger
ford skirted his own left end
from the 20 to score standing up.
Tackles Hermie Osborne and
Ardell Bright sparkled on the de
fensive for Coach F. E. Sain
don’s crew.
Ewing Set for
O'Neill Go —
EWING — Coach Marvin Mil
ler’s Ewing Tigers, with two
wins and one defeat, will be
ready Friday night for the un
deated O’Neill Eagles. The Tig
ers traditionally enjoy preying on
the upriver rivals and Friday s
affair has all the earmarks of
an interesting fracas.
Ewing dumped Neligh 7-0 in
the season’s opener, dropped a
6-13 decision to Stuart in the
second game, and trampled Elgin
12-0 in *he third contest.
Saindon's Crew to
Be at Peak Strength —
The Eagles will be at peak
strength for the Ewing tilt Fri
day night, Coach F. E. Saindon
of O’Neill high school said fol
lowing Wednesday’s workout.
The Eagles sailed through the
first two games and the practice
sessions thus far without a ser
ious injury.
The starting whistle will be
sounded at 8 p. m.
EWING BLANKS
ELGIN 12-0
EWNG — The Ewing Tigers
blanked Elgin 12-0 here Friday
night before a large crowd. Both
Ewing counters resulted from
end sweeps, one in the second
quarter and the other in the
third.
Williamson and Lampert suf
fered leg and rib injuriqs.
CHAMBERS NIPS
WOLBACH 14-6
CHAMBERS — The Chambers
high gridders flashed plentv ol
offensive Friday to whip Wol
back 14-6. Chambers scored in
both the first and third stanzas.
The big Wolbach line gave the
Holt countyans trouble all after
noon. Cooke continued to stand
out in the Chambers backfield.
Chambers entertains Butte to
day (Thursday).

CARDS HELP IN
HOMECOMING
Face Sacred Heart at
Norfolk Tonight in
Special Event
The St, Mary’s Cardinals, if
they have their way, will damp
en the homecoming festivities
for Sacred Heart at Norfolk to
night (Thursday) as the two six
man grid tnams clash in the
day’s main attraction. The open
ing whistle is scheduled for 8
p. m. under the lights in Nor
folk athletic park.
Rev. R. J. Lisco’s Cards will be
at full-strength for the go, he
said today. Halfback Jerry Tom
jack, Halfback Dick McNichols,
and Center Ed Hynes, all on the
shelf last week, are back in con
dition.
The Sacred Heart Knights this
season got off to a good start in
six-man grid warfare in the
first attempt for the Norfolk
academy. The Omaha World
Herald Tuesday ranked the Nor
folkans eighth in the state.
The 40-piece St.Mary’s band
under the direction of Ira
George, will drum up pregame
enthusiasm by parading Nor
folk’s Madison avenue at 7 p. m.
The tilt has been dubbed in
Norfolk “The Battle of Erin.”
Between halves Sacred Heart’s
homecoming queen will be
crowned.
A large number of St Mary’s
fans prepared early today to
lend moral support to the Cards
by being present at Norfolk.

Bert Childers
and the Melon Patch
Bert Childers put an ad in the
Clarion the other day. Here’s what
it said:
“Planted more melons than I
can eat this year. Stop by and pick
as many as you want. All free.”
As you can guess, plenty of folks
sent their kids over and plenty of
the parents came too. Stripped
Bert’s melon patch in no time. And
as they went away, Bert treated
the kids to lemonade, and offered
the grownups a glass of ice-cold
sparkling beer.
Naturally it puzzled some folks
... but Bert explains: “It gives me
a kick to share things when I can
afford to—whether it’s the melons,
or the lemonade, or beer. I guess I
just like to indulge my whims.”
From where I sit, if we had more
“self-indulgent" people like Bert
—who believe in share and share
alike, live and let live, this tired
world would be a whole lot better
off!
