SMALL DOSES - Past & Present:
Painting the Prairie
By ROMAINE SAUNDERS, Special Correspondent
The breeze is perfumed with
the fragrance of sweetclover
bloom; the steady roar of a
tractor comes from a ripened
grain field as it makes the
rounds, harvesting the crop;
dun-gray spots gleam in the
sunlight on the distant bluff,
where wind and countless hoofs
have worn-awav the sod; yel
low flowers and meadow daisies
give their splash of color to the
summer green; butterflies with
wings that were dipped in the
nameless shades of the cocoon’s
mysterious laboratory; bees sip
ping nectar from cups of pearl
on white clover bloom: clusters
of silver - grey clouds lying
against the eternal blue of the
heavens; the shimmering silk of
] fluttering leaves in high tree
j tops . . . it’s midafternoon in
quiet prairieland.

The Amelia postoffice serves
three routes—a far cry from the
beginning of mail service at
that point, when the bag of mail
was carried on the back of a
sturdy pioneer, who walked the
38 miles to O’Neill with it.
• • •
A friend bearing the title with
scholarly dignity gave me this
definition of the word “emer
itus”: em — out; eritus — he
ought to be.
* * *
The Frontier introduces a new
word — “countyan,” that rather
grates on an acquired sense of
orthology.
