Stuart Farmers Method Draws Attention Joe Kaplan, who farms near Stuart in Holt county, is featured in a story in the October issue of Capper’s Farmer entitled “Grass Farmer” which tells about his suc cess in pasturing a brome-alfalfa mixture. “Because growers of alfalfa and brome grass in a mixture were so few in number ten years ago, most farmers assume the combination is new,” the story in the farm magazine points out. “On the Kaplan farm, the mixture has been used continuously 45 years. “Kaplan has 100 acres of the mixture. In addition, he has 25 acres of straight brome and 75 acres of straight alfalfa. These are his main seeded crops. Last year he had 4 acres of corn and 30 acres of oats. The remainder of his 520 acres is in native pas ture, so his fields produce but two commodities—cow feed and grass seed. “He pastures brome-alfalfa mixture from the time growth starts until mid-May, then turns on native grass. Hay and seed crops then are taken and cattle go back on the pasture-hay fields in fall and stay all winter. Alfalfa that is grazed is permitted to make a good fall growth so it can store adequate food in the roots for next year’s start. Acre age is great enough to prevent damage to stand. Each year Kaplan plows about thirty acres where the alfalfa stand is poorest, farms it a year to tilled crops, then puts It back in grass. The land is sandy, and close-seeded crops prevent blowing. Kap lan’s father homesteaded the1 farm, and it never has been mort gaged.” First Presbyterian Church Kenneth J. Scott, Pastor Announcements for the Week of September 30-October 6 Sunday.
