that makes us gasp. The old lady gave such a performance on the day that George Thomas Morton was
barn in Sioux City, Iowa. He is called either "Ike” or “General,” for little George looks as if he were a pea
out of the same pod that gave us General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower. There is an interval of 53
years between the births of the two "Ikes.” George Thomas will soon be two years old.
Fired First and Last Shots at Jap Invaders
The leathernecks of the U. S. 4th marine regiment, shown as they were briefed before their landing at Yo
kosuka, Jap naval base at the entrance to Tokyo bay, by their commanding officer, Lt. Col. Fred I). Beans of
Annapolis, Md. The 4th marines served in China from 1927, then defended Corregidor. As raiders they saw
action in Solomon campaigns, Emirau, Guam, Okinawa and finally landed on Japan proper with General
MacArthur’s surrender commission. They have the honor of firing some of the first and last shots.
Old Glory Over Tokyo Embassy

Will Try German War Criminals
Left shows Francis Biddle, former U. S. attorney general, who has
been named the American member of the four-power military tribunal
that will try the major Axis war criminals. Judge John J. Parker, of Char
lotte, N. C.f has been named as Biddle's alternate. Parker was nomi
nated by President Hoover to the Supreme court but rejected by the senate.

Receives Honor—Expected Blame

“The general and his lady,” shown in Washington, shortly arter their
happy reunion. General Wainwright stated that all the time he was a
prisoner in Japanese camps, he thought the American public would bold
him responsible for the fall of the Philippines. The honors heaped upon
him by the nation came as a gratifying surprise to America’s No. 1 hero.
President’s Daughter Chorister
Listeners throughout the country had the opportunity to hear Mar
garet Truman, center, daughter of President Truman, when she broad
casted with the choir of the Trinity Episcopal church, from the Inde
pendence, Mo., “Church of the Air,” on a coast-to-coast network. She has
appeared in operas in several cities in recent years.
Rattlesnakes at Ford’s Funeral
The faithful of the Dolly Pond Church of God, surrounded by a
pushing crowd of curious, bury Brother Lewis Ford, as he had wished,
fondling over his open casket the rattlesnake which killed him. Preacher
Ford died as the result of snake bites received during a service held near
Daisy, Tenn., at which snake handling was a highlight.
Millionth G.I. Home From Europe

Named to State Post
Donald S. Russell of South Caro
lina, whose nomination as assistant
secretary of state was made by
President Truman. Russell will fill
the vacancy caused by the elevation
of Dean Acheson to undersecretary
of state. It is expected that other
changes will be made.

Karl Hermann Frank, German
secretary of state for Bohemla-Mora
via, who is better known as “Butch
er” Frank of Lidice. He is consid
ered responsible for the liquidation
of the Lidice populace following the
assassination of Reinhard Heydrich.
