Died In Omaha On
Thursday Morning
B. T. Winchell, prominent Holt
County official, died in Omaha
Thursday morning about 10:00
o’clock. He had been in ill health
for some time, but had worked ai
the Treasurer's office until about
a week ago. On Tuesday morning
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Davis took him
to Omaha for medical attention,
but it was useless and he passed
away on Thursday morning.
The body will be shipped to his
’’home here Friday morning. No
funeral arrangements had been
made up to the time we went to
press. He was 76 years, 10 months
and 29 days of age at the time of
his death. ,
Mr. Winchell had been a public
official at the court house here for
about twenty years, having served
as county assessor, deputy county
clerk, register of deeds, county
treasurer for two terms and at the
time of his death was deputy coun
ty treasurer.
He leaves besides his wife to
mourn his passing ten children:

ceeded him in death.

the “glamor” ships of the Fleet,
assembled with 11 other battle
ships, 17 aircraft carriers, five
escort carriers, 20 cruisers and
more than 290 other U. S. ships
to carry out the first stages of
the occupation of the Japanese
'home islands.

Awarded Bronze Slar
Medal By General Wyman
With the 71st .Infantry Division
in Augsburg, Germany — Master
Sergeant Cletus J. Sullivan, 33, of
O’Neill, and husband of Mrs. Ruby
Sullivan, Omaha, was recently
awarded the Bronze Star Medal
for his meritorius achievement
against the enemy in military
operations between March 27 and
May 8, by Major General Willard
G. ‘Wyman, commanding general
of the 71st Infantry Division.
Serving in the army since June
1942, Sgt. Sullivan came overseas
in January of this year, and is
currently assigned to the (censor
ed) pf the 71st Infantry Division
Headquarters in Europe.
Before entering the army he was
a Division Accountant of North
eastern Division of Consumers
Public Power District. He gradu
ated from St. Mary’s Academy in

De Backer, who recently com
pleted his boot training at Great
Lakes, has been transferred to
Camp Elliott, at San Diego, Cal.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Harty ar
rived home Saturday from Ro
chester, Minn. Ben, who under
went a major operation a few
weekai ago, is getting along nicely
and is on the way to complete
recovery, which is gratifying news
to his many friends in this city
and over the county.

son, Seaman 2-c James Golden,
has been transferred from the
Great Lakes Naval Training
Station at Great Lakes, 111., to
Camp Elliott, at San Diego, Cal.

visit with her father, Henry Mur
ray and other relatives and
friends. She is a Cadet Nurse in
training at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Funeral Services For
Frank Turay To Be
Held Sat. Morning
Funeral services will be held on (
Saturday morning at ten o’clock
at St. Patrick’s church for Frank
Turay, who passed away at his
home northeast of O’Neill on Wed
nesday afternoon after an illness
of two months. Rev. Raymond J.
Lisco will have charge of the ser
vices and burial will follow in
Calvary cemetery here.
Mr. Turay was born on April 2,
1884 in Poland and came to the
United States 38 years ago and
made his home in Omaha until
about 1925 whe;'t he moved to Holt
County, and has since made his
home on a farm.
He was united in marriage to
Katie Boldoska in Omaha on May
21, 1913. To this union were born
six children, 5 boys and one girl:
Frank, now in England with a
U. S. Armored Division; John of
O’Neill; Joseph, U. S. Army, sta
tioned at Camp Shelby, ;Miss.
Cashmere, Stephen and Rose, all
of O'Neill. He is survived by his
wife and the above mentioned
children.
Eagle Creek 4-H Club
The Eagle Creek 4-H Club held
a meeting at the J. B. Mellor
home August 26. A dinner feat
uring fried chicken was served
before the meeting.
The meeting was called to
order by Murray Mellor, presi
dent. The roll call was answer
ed by giving a safety or fire pre
vention (hint. Ed and Bob Hynes
and Stanley Benson were absent.
The main topic of discussion was
Achievement Day. Most of the
members reported that they plan
ned to attend. Then the meeti
ing adjourned and both boys and
girls practiced judging cattle,
sheep and 'horses.

Mrs. D. H. Cronin and son,
Richard, went down to Norfolk
Tuesday, where Richard enrolled
at Norfolk Junior College for the

turned Tuesday evening.

All-State Legion game with an
Omaha team, composed of the
best Legion players of that city.
The employees* of the telephone
office held a farewell picnic in
the City Park Friday evening, in
honor of Miss Lois Osborne, who
left on Monday for Omaha. She
is a member of the Cadet Nurse
corps and will take her training
at Clarkson hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bosn and

went to Omaha on Friday. Lt.

of the United States Army Nurse
Corps, left from Omaha to re
turn to her post of duty, at Fort
Snelling, Minn., after spending a
nine day furlough here visiting
her parents and other relatives

Romaine Saunders returned
Tuesday afternoon and took the
afternoon bus for Atkinson, on
his way to his ranch home south
west of Amelia. Romaine had
been in the eaist about six weeks
and visited sections of the coun
try that he had never seen be
fore, including Wa^hisgton, D.
C. He undoubtedly enjoyed his
visit to the nation’s capitol—he
was there a week—for he met
his sister, Mrs. Grace Shanner
whom he had not seen for over
fifty years, since she and Mr.
Shanner moved from this county
to southern Missouri, in the early
nineties. He also put in some
time iwth his son, Glen, wife and
son in Rhode Island. On his re
turn to Nebraska he visited at
his daug.hfters home in Lincoln
and iwth his son. Ned, wife and
family at Grand Island. He says
the east is all right for those
who like it. but as far as he is
concerned he prefers the broad
and fertile prairies of Nebraska.

rived last week to spend some
time visiting at the Dugal Allen
home and to visit other relatives

Mrs. Eva Johnson and family
arrived home Sunday night,
after spending two weeks at the
Sam Banks home in O’Neill.
Seaman 1-c and Mrs. Lester
Perry were dinner and supper
guests at the Dean Perry home
Sunday. Seaman Perry has just
recently returned from the South
Pacific. While on the Philip
pines he met Pvt. Joe Luth.
