Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Cooper, of Winner, S. D., drove to Cham bers Saturday to visit Saturday evening with relatives and friends. They returned to Win ner Sunday, accompanied by Pvt. and Mrs. Hale Osborne and Sharon. Mrs. Jim Kirkland came up frpm Stanton Monday for a short visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Walter. She visited Tuesday at the Kirkland home in Atkinson. Miss Patricia Wood came up from Omaha to spend the week end with her parents, Mr .and Mrs. Henry Wood, Phyllis and Dale. Buddy Butts is assisting with the work in the Wayne Smith home. Pvt. and Mrs. Hale Osborne and Sharon came up from Camp Walters, Texas, Thursday. Pvt. Osborne has a short furlough be fore going to Oregon. Mary Lou Spath, Marie Gib son, Doreen Tangeman and Violet Sanderson, who attended the Sanderson, who are attending the Wayne State Teachers College, spent the week-end at home. The Women’s Society of Chris tian Service met Thursday with Mrs. Merle Fagon. A large num ber were present. After a short business meeting the ladies work ed on a quilt for the hospital. Mr. and Mrs. N. G. Dorr, of Marcus, Iowa, were transacting business in our city Friday. Mrs. L. O. Lenz and Luetta and Phyllis Carpenter left Thursday morning for Omaha. Luetta will attend school there this summer. Mrs. Lenz, after spend ing a few days in Omaha will visit relatives at Hooper before returning home. Phyllis Carpen ter will visit relatives and friends at Omaha, Fremont and Herman, Nebr. Mr. and Mrs C. J. Barnum, of Neligh, are spending a few days at their home in Chambers and greeting their many relatives and friends. The Silver Star Serving Sisters •»-H Club under the leadership of Mrs. Lloyd deed, held an achievement day at the Valley Center School house Friday after noon. There are ten girls en rolled in the club. Each girl in vited her mother and one other guest, and the Victory Cookers 4-H Club members, with their leader and assistant leader and county agricultural agent, Neil Dawes. Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Peltzer and Mrs. A. A Walter drove to Stanton Friday to see their broth er, Pvt Marion Peltzer, who is home on furlough after being re leased from a German prison camp. Mr. and Mrs. George Tompson have again taken over the man agement of the cafe, adjoining the bakery. This cafe has been op erated by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spath, who came here from Gor don, Nebr., several months ago. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Walter and Raymond, Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Peltzer, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Fagon and, Judy Fagon spent the Fourth at the Wayne Smith home. Mrs. Jim Kirkland and Mrs. Bob Fredericks spent Tuesday night at the C. N. Small home at Amelia. Mrs. Lela Crandall and Elaine Adams left for Omaha on Wed nesday of last week. They ex pect to get employment and re main there for the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Held re ceived word from their son, S Sgt. Bill Held, that he would soon receive a discharge from the ifrmy. He is in a hospital at Van Couver, Wash. He returned home Monday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Tange man report that their son, Law rence Tangeman, who is wifth the Fifth Division, is on his way home from the European theater of war. , Pvt. George Naehtman arrived home Saturday for a thirty day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Naehtman, Edwin and Genevieve. Pvt. Naehtman has been in the fighting in Ger many since April. He is in the Ordnance Department and is being sent to Camp Gruber, Ok lahoma, when his furlough is over. Mrs. John Naehtman and Pvt. George Naehtman drove to O’Neill Saturday to visit their nephew and cousin, Lt. Stephen Price. A birthday dinner in honor of Frank Porter and Omar McClen ahan was held Sunday in the Frank Porter home. These pres, ent were, The Porter family, Mrs. Wayne Rowsa and daughter, Mr. and Mrs! Omar McClt nna han and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Art Snyder, of Ewing. Mrs. Glen Taylor and Kenneth spent Saturday night and Sunday at the Donald Grimes home. Pfc. Myron Smith is home from Germany on a thirty day iur lough. He is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith at Fonda, Iowa, and expects to vi.,it his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jarman and family before his furlough is up. Louis Forbes spent Wednesday of last week at the Price home near O’Neill. Their nephew, Lt. Stephen Price, is now home fi^om a German prison camp. Mrs. William Newton visited Mrs. Dean Perry Saturday after noon. Herman Grothe has a bad case of blood poisoning in his arm. Mrs. Joe Babl and daughter, Rita, were on business in O’Neill Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Dusatko and girls spent Sunday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Peters, of O’Neill. Mrs. Wayne Bates and daugh ter, Karen, were Sunday din ner guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Kee. PVT. CLAUDE BAILEY RETURNS HOME Mrs. Frank Foreman received word that her brother, Pvt. j Claude Bailey had arrived at his, home in Dutch Mills, Arkansas.; after being liberated from a Ger man prisoner of war camp. When taken prisoner in March j he weighted 20Q pounds and j when he was liberated, about three months later, he weighed; only 137 pounds. What he went through while a prisoner wlas horrible. Ht was worked hard without food and his feet had been frozen and still had not healed completely when he arrived home. The night he was taken pris oner the Germans shelled over them until morning and if it had not been foggy they would all have bee killed. The next morn ing they were formed into ranks and marched three days wtihout food. At the end of the march they were loaded into box cars and headed for internment, camps. While riding in the box cars the train was bombed by the Americans and one side of the car in which Claude was riding had one side blown off. Pvt. Bailey was suffering from malnutrition when the Ameri cans released his outfit, but is now rapidly recovering. He is spending a sixty day furlough visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Bailey at Dutch Mills, Ark. Rose Mary and Cecelia Babl vis ited the Homer Ernst girls Thurs day afternoon. Tillie Peters, of O’Neill, is i spending a few days this week visiting her sister, Mrs. Leonard Dusatko and family. Merle Foreman trucked some cattle to O’Neill Monday for Joe Jurgensmier and Alex McCon nell. Mrs Herman Grothe and Mrs. William Grothe went to Wisner last Saturday to attend the fun eral of Mrs Herman Grothe’s grandmother.
