When British naval officers recently visited a Jugoslavian village held by patriot partisan forces they were
taken to meet the commander (top left). At his right is his interpreter. Bottom left: Using the partisan

marked caps of their organization. Right: She doesn’t look it, but this young woman has the reputation of
being an outstanding sniper and anti-Nazi saboteur. Women like her comprise 25 per cent of the partisan
army. No names are given to shield friends and relatives from possible Nazi reprisals.

Sea Ceremony for Dead Marines

Xmas a Year Late
Flag-draped caskets of three U. S. marines who died at Tarawa rest
on a hatch aboard a transport as a burial service is conducted. Comrades
^of the dead stand by with bowed heads. Marines were assigned to
Rtake Tarawa island because it was known to be the most heavily
fortified of the Gilbert group. Marine losses after 76 hours of fighting
on Tarawa approximately equalled losses on Guadalcanal after six months.

Part of California’s Record Grape Crop
A few of the 2,610,000 tons of grapes grown In California are pictured

of the United States, and Prime Minister Winston ChurchHI of England,
as they appeared during their conference in Teheran, Iran, where they
committed their peoples to full co-operation during the war and after it.
Their declaration read in part: "The common understanding which we
have reached guarantees that victory will be ours. And as to the peace
we are sure that our concord will make it an enduring peace. W'e recog
nize fully the supreme responsibility resting upon us and all the United
Nations to mal'’! a peace which will command the good will of the over
whelming masses of the peoples of the world and banish the scourge and
terror of war for many generations. We came here with hope and deter
mination. We leave here friends in fact, in spirit, and in purpose.*'
War Orphan With Army Buddies Overseas
Under the auspices of the “Stars and Stripes” this little British war
orphan enjoyed a day’s outing with a U. S. quartermaster battalion which
has adopted her. She is pictured somewhere in England standing in line
for ciiow with buddies.
