INMAN ITEMS The Senior class, with Supt. MiCiurg, had their “sneak” last Friday and Saturday. They left earl.' Friday morning, going to Omana, where they visited points of interest. In the evening they were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Keyes. On Saturday they welt to Lincoln, where they spent tl e day. They returned home aft 'r a show that night. A shower was given for Miss Patty Wa "son on Friday after noon. April 16, at the Aid parlors. Flags were used for decorations. Mrs. Harvey Tompkins was in charge of t -e entertainment, which consisted 01 readings and games. Each guest brought a fav orite recipe for the bride. Miss Watson received many lovely gifts. Lunch was served by the hostess. Mrs. O. W. French of O'Neill and Mrs. Robert Taylor of Beatrice were out of towr. guests present. A. N. Butler spent Sunday at Neligh with Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Butler. Mr. and Mr<= L P T''"v'u:" went to Norfolk last Saturday, where they spent the week-end with her brother, L. H. Doughty, and family. They returned home Sunday evening. Bob Mossmaa. who has beer working in a defense plant in Los Angeles, arrived home Tues day morning. He will be at homt until he is called to the arm'' Mrs. I. L. Watson, daughter Patty and son Sammy left Mon day for Lincoln. On Wednesday they w*ent to Omaha, where Mr. Watson joined them and they lef for Tucson. Ariz., where on Sun day Miss Watson will be married to Levi Opper, the wedding to take place in the Methodis. church. Mrs. T. D. Hutton entertained the Y. M. Club on Tuesday for their day meeting. A lovely din ner was served at noon. Mrs. L R. Tompkins was a guest. Mrs. Robert Taylor, who spent a week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Moor, returned to her home in Beatrice last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Brittell have moved to Chambers, where they will work for his brother, Dee, on his farm. Mrs. A. Tomlinson, Mrs. Virgil Tomlinson and Mrs. Earl Watson were Norfolk visitors on Wed nesday. Mrs. Eva Murten M’-s. G E Moor and Mrs. L. R. Tompkins entertained the Womans Club of O’Neill on Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Murten. Mrs. Har vey Tompkins reviewed the bo"k “The Robe,” by Lloyd Douglas. The hostess served lunch. Harvey Tompkins took a truck load of fat steers to the Sioux City market on Tuesday, return in" home Wednesday. The Commercial Club met a* the cafe Wednesday evening for their regular monthly dinner a no meeting. Mr. and Mrs. T D Httueo re ceived word from their son, Gray don, that he is now stationed at Camp Blanding, Fla. Riverside 4-H Club The Riverside 4-H Communitv Club met at the school house of District No. 5 on Tuesday eve ning, April 20. Twelve members were present. There were also eleven visitors. Future plans were made and four new members were voted into the club: Dor othy Ann Davidson, Marie Schnei der, Ramona Schneider and Don ald Schneider. The next meeting will be held at the school house of District No. 5 on Tuesday eve ning, May 11. Bill Kubitschek, who attends Creighton University, arrived home Thursday to spend the Easter holidays with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. F. J. Kubitschek. Mrs. June Baker left for her ranch near Stuart on Tuesday, after spending the winter in this city. Miss Dorothy Liewer of Inman spent the week-end here visiting Mrc MeCartnev Miss Ruth Ann Biglin, of Peters burg, will arrive home tonight to spend Easter with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Biglin and other relatives and friends. Views of Congress... By Dr. A. L. Miller, M. C. Now that Arbor Day approaches we are reminded of the great in terest that Nebraska has always had in trees. Originally a great treeless plain, except along the water courses, the interests of its Inhabitants has transformed it into a landscape with trees in ev ery direction. The principal advo cate of tree plant ing in our state and in the tree-1 less sections o f our' country was our own distin guished citizen, J. Sterling Morton. His home, Arbor Lodge, near Ne oraska City, now a state park, is a forest of trees mostly set out by his own hands. Every Nebras kan who has not visited it should do so. Two trees stand in the capital city in honor of J. Sterling Mor ton. One of them, a pine tree, is on the southeast section of the capitol grounds across from the Congressional Library. It wa planted there on April 27, 1936. with a ceremony sponsored by the Nebraska Delegation in Con gress and attended by the Vice President, Speaker of the House, the Architect of the Capitol and several other dignitaries. The Ne braska delegation was composed of Senators Norris and Burke and Congressmen Morehead, Stefan, McLaughlin, Binderup and Cof fee. Senator Norris turned the first spade. At its planting the tree measured four feet. In seven years it has grown to a height of fifteen feet. The other tree stands on the grounds of the Department of Ag riculture and is an elm. It was planted the same year and is a memorial to Mr. Morton as Sec retary of Agriculture in the cab inet of President Cleveland. On April 22, Arbor Day, the Nebraska Delegation expects to hold a short ceremony at the Ne braska tree on the plaza of the capitol. Mr. Morton is honored as one of the two great Nebraskans whose statues stand in the capitol build ing. Do you know the name of the other Nebraskan so honored. We will tell you about him later. The statue of J. Sterling Mor ton stands in the Hall of Columns on the ground floor in the House wing of the capitol. It is of bronze on a blue marble pedestal. He wears the knee length coat of the statesmen of his day. He holds a book in his left hand, the pages divided by his index finger. To his right and a little to the rear is the stump of an oak tree with several leaves carved near the top. In the marble base is carved the name JULIUS STERLING MORTON and below it the name of his beloved state, NEBRASKA A little further down is carved an acorn on a small branch. On the back of the tree trunk appears hs name cast in the bronze and the dates 1832-1902. We cannot leave the thought of Arbor Day without recalling the tree claims of the early settlers. Those of us in the middle years, especially those who lived in cen tral and western Nebraska re member these early attempts to prbvide the trees that nature de-1 nied us. My father homesteaded a tree claim in Pierce county in the early eighties. The Shelter Belt program has provided many excellent young groves in Nebraska. The life and | work of J. Sterling Morton is a continuing inspiration to the peo- ] pie of his state and to the na tion as a whole. The following quotation from a letter received this week from Food Administrator Prentiss Brown will be of interest: “You will be glad to learn that sugar, (will) be made available to home| canners without surrender of ra-, tion coupons. In the 1942 season housewives applied to their local boards for allotments of sugar on' the basis of one pound for each four quarts of fruit they planned to can. The procedure for obtain ing sugar this year will be sub Former O’Neill Boy New Gregory, S. D., Mayor O’Neill relatives received word that Ivan G. Bain, formerly of this city, was elected mayor of Gregory, S. D., at the election last Tuesday. Ivan was raised in this community, but has been a resident of the Rosebud country for several years and is one of Gregory’s most successful mer chants. He has many friends in O’Neill who extend congratula tions and best wishes to Gregory’s Mayor elect. Light Run Of Livestock At Monday’s Sale Here With prices still lower on hogs and steady to lower on cattle, there was a light run. of livestock at the local sale Monday. There were not many lightweight cattle showed up, with steer calves bringing from $16.00 to $17.00 per hundred and heifer calves from $14.50 to $16.00. Yearling steers brought $13.90 to $15.10 and year ling heifers $12.50 to $14.00 per hundred. Two-year-old steers sold from $13.80 to $14.70 per hundred. Cows brought from $7 90 to $11.90 and bulls from $12.00 to $12.40 per hundred. Butcher hogs were lower than last week, bringing from $14.15 to $14 25 per hundred, and sows from $13.75 to $14.10. Stock pigs sold from $16.00 to $16.80. There were quite a number of small pigs that sold by the head. There were 40 head of sheep here and they were also sold by the head. Next sale Monday, April 26th, with a horse sale being held along with the regular sale. Horse sale will start at 11:00 o’clock a. m. Hospital Notes Mrs. John Miller admitted on Thursday for medical treatment. Charles Pettijohn admitted on Friday for medical care. Mrs. Charles Boyle and baby daughter dismissed on Thursday. Wayne Bates of Emmet under went a tonsilectomey on Friday. Mrs. Marjorie Begtol and children of Kearney, visited at the home of her parents. Dr. and Mrs. L. A. Carter Sunday and Monday. Rev. and Mrs. Ralph Chamber lain left Thursday for Grand Is land, after conducting a series of meetings at the Presbyterian church. Mrs. Scott went to Creighton to spend several days visiting her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Oppen. Circle No. 1, Presbyterian Guild, will meet at the home of Mrs. Ryland Parker this after noon. Mrs. Paul Shierk will be assisting hostess. Wednesday Mrs. Hanson under went a major operation at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. She is getting along nicely. Mrs. Corkle and Miss Hanson returned home Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hahn of Pierce spent Sunday visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carsten Hanson. Staff Sergeant L,eo Hanson, ot Fort Riley, Kansas, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carsten Hanson on Sunday. William Biglin, who attends Creighton University, arrived home Thursday morning to spend the Easter holidays visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Biglin and other relatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Calvert of Norfolk, formerly of O’Neill, are the parents of a baby boy, born this morning. Miss Rose Mary Biglin, of Hot Springs, S. D.. will arrive Sat urday to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Biglin ond other relatives and friends over Easter Miss Hazel Iler, who attends Duschene College in Omaha, came home Wednesday, to spend sev eral days visiting relatives and friends. Dewey Schaeffer went to Lin coln after his daughter. Patty, and brought her home to spend a week before returning to her studies at the University. Patty is just recovering from scarlet fever. Sgt. Duane Shaw of Fort Smith, Ark., was a Sunday overnight guest at the Clarence Shaw home.
