(Wrlttm far the Treasury Department In eonneetien with the Retailers’ "8AY YES" campaign te complete the naUen's I OO.OOO,non partially fllleg War Stamp albnma.) t • What I myself saw in my four years in Europe gave me a new realization of the priceless rights which we here enjoy. No secret police can in the night whisk us away, never again to be seen by those we love. None of us can be deprived by any party, state or tyrant of those pre cious civil liberties which our laws and our courts guarantee. . None of us can be persecuted for practicing the faith which we found at our mother’s knee. None of us can be persecuted, tor tured or killed because of the fact that an accident of fate might have made us of the same race as the Nazarene. No American can be placed by any party or government in a regi mented vise which takes from him or her either freedom of economic opportunity or political religious lib erty. What would the millions of unfor tunate men, women and children in Europe give to be able to live and enjoy such a way of life? Well, in this war, those are the things in our lives which are in jeopardy. Our boys are dying to pre serve them for us. Then we can do no less than to “say yes’’ and fill those war stamp albums. It is our duty and privilege to help the secretary of the treasury, Mr. Morgenthau, in his magnificent effort to do the tremendous Job of getting the money to keep our boys supplied with the weapons with which to fight our fight. Surely that is little enough for us to do on the home front. The O’Neill Woman’s Club will meet at the home of Mrs. Seth Noble Wednesday, January 27, at 2:30 p. m. Mrs. J. D. HOOVER'S SALARY William Allen White in the Em poria, Kan., Gazette: “As secre tary of commerce, and later as president of the United States, Mr. Hoover put his entire salary into a special account and spent it exclusively in the public in terest. He paid a special staff of necessary experts for whom no appropriation was available. He supplemented the salary of other men out of this special fund to bring them into the public serv ice. But mostly his salary was subscribed to public charity. He did not profit personally j penny by any salary payments to him self, not even for his own living expenses or otherwise. It all went back to the public. In 1931, when the depression hit the land. President Hoover and all members of his cabinet voluntarily took a 20% salary cut. From that time on, this 20% por tion of his salary and their’s was returned to the treasury. But the remainder of his salary was spent as indicated above. Never has the white house seen a more honest, courageous, intel ligent. public - spirited president than Herbert Hoover. He was a poor salesman of himself, but he had a precious package in his heart and mind. _— Marriage Licenses Delbert Whiting and Irene Durse, both of Ewing, on Janu ary 13. 1943. Hospital Notes Mr|. THE OLD JUDGE SAYS.77 "Judge, I didn’t realize till the other night when 1 ran across an article in the paper what a whale of a lot of industrial alcohol the government needs for the war.” " I should say it does. Chet. 1 understand the beverage distillers around the country are producing about 240,000,000 gallons of indus trial alcohol this year for ammunition, tires. and other things. I’d say it'9 mighty tortunate these distilleries are available to do the job. Otherwise, il we still had prohibition, the government would have had to spend mil lions ot dollars and use up a lot oi critical materials to build plants...to say nothing of all the time it would take. It might have been just another case of ‘too little, too late’.” ( tinference ot Alcoholic Beverage Industrie*, lm
