As Java—Land of Bridges—Prepared for Japs
In the United States an ordinary railroad line would count its bridges and trestles by the scores or by the
hundreds. In Java they are numbered in the thousands. Bridges are seen everywhere spanning rivers and ra
vines. And so, before Java fell to the invading Japs, the Netherlands East Indies mountain army became ex
perts in demolition. At left they are seen as they mined a bridge. Right: A small pontoon bridge for infantry

Reds" Manager Does a Bit of Explaining
Even baseball comes in for a streamlining these modern days. Here

device is in use at the Reds training eamp at Tampa, saving much wear
and tear on valuable pitching arms.
Reunion After Escape From Hong Kong
China’s most famous family were reunited In Chungking following
Madame Sun Yat-Sen’s dramatic escape by air from Hong Kong to the

Commission Light Cruiser San Juan

Armored Cars Meet Jap Invader in Java
Driving from three beachheads, Japanese troops took Subank and cut
the main northern coastal railway linking Batavia with cities to the
east on the island of Java. The above picture was taken as Batavia
fell. Members of the city guard, mounted in armored cars, are shown as
they attempted to defend the city’s capital.
Wounded by Japs
Gen. Pat Hurley, secretary of war
in the Hoover administration, who
was reported wounded at Port Dar
win while en route to his new post as
U. 8. minister to New Zealand.
Flying from Java, his army bombrr
was attacked by a swarm of Jap
bombers. Later his quarters at Port
Darwin were shelled and Hurley was
slightly Injured.

ego, Calif.
Torpedoed 4 Times
Thirty-nine survivors who saw an
Axis submarine wolf pack sink their
ship, the 8. 8. Marore, landed safely
at Norfolk, Va. No one was lost.
Among the survivors was Charles
Troisen, 62, shown above. Seeing a
ship fall prey to a torpedo is an
old story to him. He had three ves
sels shot from under him in World
War I.
To Replace Men
A huge campaign to train women
and girls to take the place of men in
industry is now under way. Here a
girl finishes a cylinder for an air
plane engine in Philadelphia.
To save frequent dusting, a dust
cloth that does a thorough job is a

blespoon of furniture polish of good
quality into a quart glass fruit jar,
and shake the jar until the polish

be revived by washing with a
cloth wrung out in warm water,
to which a little vinegar has been
added. Polish can be restored
after washing by rubbing with a
mixture of the whites of two eggs
beaten up with a dash of turpen
tine.
