As Java—Land of Bridges—Prepared for Japs
In the United States an ordinary railroad line would count its bridges and trestles by the scores or by the
hundreds. In Java they are numbered in the thousands. Bridges are seen everywhere spanning rivers and ra
vines. And so, before Java fell to the invading Japs, the Netherlands East Indies mountain army became ex

the main northern coastal railway linking Batavia with cities to the

Torpedoed 4 Times
Thirty-nine survivors who saw an
Axis submarine wolf pack sink their
ship, the 8. 8. Marore, landed safely
at Norfolk, Va. No one was lost.
Among the survivors was Charles
Troisen, 62, shown above. Seeing a
ship fall prey to a torpedo is an
old story to him. He had three ves
sels shot from under him in World
War I.

A huge campaign to train women
and girls to take the place of men in

To save frequent dusting, a dust
