The Frontier, July 9, 1886
The commissioners are now
ready to receive propositions for a
site for the new court house. In
terested parties will please take
immediate action.
The dedication of the new
Methodist church at Mineola takes
place one week from next Sunday.
H. G. Baluss, late of the Cleve
land (Ohio) Herald was in O’Neill
on Tuesday on his way to Star,
where he expects to start a five
column quarto newspaper, the first
issue of which will appear about
August 1.
The hail of last Friday did con
siderable damage in portions of
the county north, northeast and
east. H. Hodgkins crops at Leonie,
were all destroyed and the win
dows in the north and east side of
his house were all broken except
two.

Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Dickson re
turned Sunday from their eastern
trip.
Wall number three of the city
system of pumps and wells was
given a test last Saturday and un
derwent an inspection by Mayor
Gallagher and Councilman Bren

Thomas Malty}*, father of the
late Judge Malone, died at his home
4 miles northwest of Page on
July 6. He was 68 years of age
and had been a resident of the
•county for ^en years.
Thirty Years Ago
The Frontier, July 14, 1910
Workmen commenced the foun
dation for the Northwestern pass
enger station last Monday morn
ing and as soon as the foundation
is completed the brick layers will
arrive and commence work on the
building proper.
Pat Harty left this morning for
Shellsburg, Wise., where he will
visit his parents and other rela
tives for a couple of weeks. He
was accompanied by Miss Etta
Froelich and Irenaie Biglin, who
will spend a couple of weeks vis
iting their school mate, Miss Lizzie
Harty.
The contract for the construc
tion of the O’Neill sewer system
■was let by the Mayor and city |
council last evening to Donohoe &
Peterson of Omaha, for $16,507.46.
Five bids were submitted for the
work. The contractors expected to
be going full blast by August 1.
The remnants of the once proud
and popular populist party held a
convention in the office of the
county attorney at the court house
last Wednesday afternoon. The
convention was composed of J. A.
Robertson, William Lell, W. B.
Cooper, L. A. Jillson and four from
O’Neill.
The democratic county conven
tion was held in the court room last
Wednesday afternoon and was the
poorest attended and least exciting
convention held by democracy since
their return to life after the death
of populism. Outside of seven
delegates from O’Neill there were
but six democrats present: Felix
Hale, J. M. Morgan, T. J. Wilburn,
Atkinson; E. W. Wilcox, Inman;
S. A. Hickman, Sheridan; Ed Tight,
Willowdale. Frank Campbell pre
sided as chairman and G. W.
Miles, secretary
Twenty Years Ago
The Frontier, July 8, 1920
Con Keyes returned the middle
of last week from a two weeks vis
it to the land of his nativity, Park
hill, Ontario, Canada. This was
his first visit there in forty years
and he found but few of his old time
friends.
Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Doyle and
children left the first of the week
for their future home at Belding,
Mich.
Etigene H. Smith, president of
the Farmers Bank of Page, was
found dead in a cow pasture ;n the
outskirts of Page last Tuesday
morning, his head, arms and
shoulders submerged in a half bar
rel tub half filled with water. He
had been dead about an hour when
found..
Nineteen and sixty-five hun
dredths inches of rain fell in this
city from April 1, 1920, up to and
including July 6, 1920, according to
Government weather recorder,
Harry Bowen.
Ten Years Ago
The Frontier, July 10, 1930
Enard Leach has arranged with
the Burlington for a site for an ele
vator and expects to erect one soon.
The oiling of the road south
of O’Neill is progressing nicely; the
hot, dry weather seems to be just
right for spreading oil.
Mrs. Elizabeth Harfe, one of the
early settlers of the county, pass
ed away at her home southeast of
this city last Wednesday, following
an illness of only a few weeks, at
the age of 83 years.

Motion by Smith that the road
commencing at the point on Sec
tion Thirty-three, Township Twen
ty-seven, Range Nine, Holt Coun
ty, Nebraska, where said public
county road crossed the Chicago
& Northwestern Railway Company
tracks from north to south and
thence running in a northwesterly
direction along the south side and
parallel and adjacent to the tracks
of the Chicago & Northwestern
Railway Company through Section
twenty-nine, Township twenty-sev
en, Range Nine, Holt County, Ne
braska, where said road recrosses
the tracks of the Chicago & North
i western Railway Company from
south to north be vacated.
Motion lost for want of a sec
ond.
Motion by Sullivan, seconded by
Wulf that prayer of the petitioners
on this petition be denied. Mo
tion carried.
The application of James Don
lin for Rural Dance Hall at
O’Donnel’s Lake was read at this
meeting.
Motion by Matousek, seconded
by Gibson that date of hearing on
this petition be set for June 26,
1940, 2:00 P. M. Carried.

CRONIN AS TEMPORARY
JUDGE OF THE COUNTY
COURT OF HOLT COUNTY, NE
BRASKA, TO ACT IN THE MAT
TER OF THE ESTATE OF AN
TONIA REINKE, DECEASED.
Whereas it appears to this Board
of Supervisors of Holt County, Ne
braska, from the petition of Louis
WT. Reimer, County Judge, that he,
as such, is disqualified from acting
in that capacity, in the matter of
the Estate of Antonia Reinke, De
ceased, now pending in the County
Court of Holt County, Nebraska,
and that it is therefore necessary
for this board to appoint a tem
porary acting County Judge to act
in regard to said Estate and mat
ter. Now therefore, I do hereby
nominate Julius D. Cronin for the
appointment as Temporary Acting
County Judge in this above mat
ter, and recommend that he be al
lowed to qualify as County Judge
in said matter by taking the re
quired oath, and giving the re
quired bond according to Law,
and that he thereupon discharge
the duties of said office in the mat
ter above mentioned.
Motion by Matousek, seconded
by Carson, that above resolution be
approved. Carried.
On motion, the Bond of Julius
D. Cronin, was approved.
AGREEMENT
THIS AGREEMENT made and
entered into this 28th day of May,
A. D., 1940, by and between the
County of Holt, State of Nebraska,
tion 35, Township 27, Range 9, all
County, Nebraska,
WITNESSETH:
WHEREAS, the County of Holt
is one of the duly organized coun
ties within the State of Nebraska
and, wheraas, the said Joe Tom
jack is the owner of the Southeast
Quarter of Section 35, Township
27, Range 9 and,
WHEREAS, the said County of
Holt, for governmental purposes
and for use in the construction of
roads, needs certain gravel which
is obtainable from the real estate
above described and owned by said
second party.
Now, therefore, it is agreed by
and between the parties hereto that
the said first party, the County of
Holt, shall have the right to go
upon and take from the real estate
owned by the second party describ
ed as the Southeast Quarter of Sec
tion 35, T ownship 27, Range 9, all
of the gravel that said first party
may require and said first party
schall pay the said rsecoqd party
the sum of live cents per cubic
yard. It is understood and agreed
that the said first party and its
representatives and agents shall
have the right to go upon, over and
across the real estate of the sec
ond party for the purpose of ob
taining and removing such gravel
as it may. require and that the
cost per cubic ward to be paid for
such gravel shall cover all of the
costs to said first party.
Motion by Wulf, seconded by
Matousek that above agreement be
approved and accepted.

where they plan on spending the
week, fishing.
Mrs. Lawrence Russell and
children left last week for North
