    Community ‘Big Tent’ Begins Tenth Annual Tour
Tbe Gainesville (Texas) Community circus Is the "only show of Its kind in the world." The circus, with
Elliott Roosevelt as ringmaster, utilizes bankers, school teachers, housewives, business men, doctors—in fact,
anyone in the community. No one is paid for his services, and the circus plays in eight or ten towns

Where Pope Pius XII Will Mount Throne
Assumption of St. Peter’s throne by Pope Pius XII will be completed
Thursday, May 18, witii ceremonies in which the pontiff will formally
take possession of the Cathedral of St. John Lateran, above, his see as
bishop of Rome. The procession from Vatican to the Roman cathedral
will be the first of its kind in 93 years, popes since that time having been
voluntary “prisoners” inside the Vatican walls. This imprisonment was
ended by the Lateran concordat of 1999.
JUDGE UNDER FIRE
Martin T. Manton of New York,
former senior judge of the United
States circuit court of appeals, will
go on trial May 22 under two indict
ments alleging conspiracy to bribe
a judicial officer, and conspiracy to
obstruct justice. Judge Manton re
signed last January after New York
District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey
charged he, or companies in which
he had an interest, had received
more than $439,000 from individuals
or companies whose affairs had been
before his court.

Snake’s Fast Broken by Zoo Keepers
Strangler, a 15-foot anaconda snake, who started to fast upon his
arrival at the Philadelphia zoo last August, was finally forced to eat
despite himself. Roger Conant, zoo curator, used a ram rod through
the snake’s open mouth, pushing food through a tube in its throat. It
took 10 men to hold Strangler during the forcible feeding process. Rabbit
meat was served.
British Women Aid in Defense Program

Territorials, the auxiliary air force and members of the Air Raid
Precaution services took part in London’s first national defense display
in ' yde park recently. Two members of the Women’s Ambulance corps
are shown as they canvassed for recruits during the defense display.
England has taken great strides in air raid precautions, even to the in
stallation of family-size bomb-proof shelters.

State college student started his ‘‘kissathon caper.” Capturing feminine
victims on the run, Marshall Blum, right, made good on his wager to
kiss 30 coeds in 20 minutes, and much to the astonishment of Jim Fits*
gerald, clocker, did it in five minutes. Betty Welch, victim, seems
slow to appreciate the opportunities of this history-making event.
15,000 Hours Spent Building Largest Model Bridge
Dominick de Gregorio, 40, of Philadelphia, Pa., is pictured with his 30-foot model of the Delaware river
bridge. De Gregorio started his miniature in 193!^ during a time when he was unemployed. He has spent
15,000 hours in its construction, and has spent $1,000 in the building of it. The bridge, unusually light, is
made of balsa wood, and stands only 22 Inches high. The only tools used were homemade knives and a razor.

can be added to a low-ceilinged
