Winners in Lions Club Decoration Contests Mrs. Helen Simar of the Simar apparel shop has been announced as the winner of the $5.00 prize for having the best window display, and Dr. J. P. Brown has been an nounced as the winner of the Home decoration contest, both of which contests were sponsored by the O’Neill Lions club. The contests aroused much interest among the merchants and citizens of O’Neill, and as a result there were many beautiful and unusual decorations, which helped to give a Christmas air to the entire city. Many citi zens have already made plans as to what form their decorations will take next year, and it is to be hoped that the Lions club will make this event an annual affair. Annual Meeting P. C. A. On January 11, 1939. Farmers and stockmen in Boyd, Holt, Wheeler and Garfield count ies will attend the annual stock holders meeting of the O’Neill Production Credit association on Wednesday, January 11, according to D. C. Schaffer, Holt county stockman who is president of the credit organization. The meeting will be at the K. C. hall, starting at 10 a. m., followed by a noon lunch. Election of two directors for terms of three years will be a fea ture of the business session. A number of discussions for stock holders are scheduled. James W. Rooney, secertary treasurer, will present the financial statement. Since its organization nearly five years ago, under the Farm Credit act of 1933, the O’Neill as sociation has advanced more than 1,300 livestock and general farm loans, totaling $1,500,000. Present directors of the credit “co-op,” in addition to Mr. Schaf fer, are A. U. Dix of Butte, M. F. Gribble of O’Neill, C. F. Clark, of Burwell and Otto Oberg, of Eric son. BRIEFLY STATED Miss Eva Protivinsky, who has been an employee of the Gamble store here for the past two years, was transferred effctive immedi ately to the store at Sioux Falls, S. D. Miss Protivinsky left for her new position on Monday morning. Mrs. Ira Moss, Mrs. F. N. Cronin, Mrs. H. J. Hammond, Miss Mae Hammond and Miss Marie Biglin drove to Petersburg on Thursday and spent the day visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Agnes. Miss Dawn Howard, of New York City arrived Friday, and spent the holidays here at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Howard. In New York, Miss Howard is connected with the Na tional Broadcasting company. Dr. and Mrs. L. R. Sutcliff, of Custer, S. D., visited here Christ mas eve with Mrs. Sutcliff’s mother, Mrs. John Carr, and other relatives on their way to' Vermillion, S. D., where they planned to spend the balance of the holidays. George Cook drove to Ord Satur day night, returning the next morning with his brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cook, Jr., who spent the holidays here at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cook, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Cook re turned to Ord Monday evening. The County Clerk is with out the services of his efficient deputy this week, as said deputy, Miss Mary Lois Hammond went ice skating Tuesday evening and sprained her ankle. Last reports indicate she is much improved but still unable to walk. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rose and daughter, Norma, left Sunday for Omaha where they spent Christ mas at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Springer. Mr. Rose returned home Monday night while his wife and daughter re mained for the balance of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Beha and daughter, Miss Nan and son, Mat hew left Thursday for Omaha where Miss Nan will take the train for Brooklyn, New York where she is employed in a hospital there, and the others will visit relatives and friends in Omaha. Joe Martin made a business trip to Ainsworth on Tuesday. Ross Welton, of Atkinson, was in O’Neill on business Tuesday. Merle Hickey left Wednesday j for Gregory, S. D., on a business trip. Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Hancock, and sons, Robert, Wayne and Marlin, af Tekamah arrived Saturday and spent the holidays visiting rela tives here. Miss Florence Malone returned to her home in Omaha on Monday evening, after spending Christmas here at the home of her parents, Judge and Mrs. C. J. Malone. — Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Spann and son, of Atkinson spent Christmas day at the home of Mrs. Spann’s parents, Judge and Mrs. C. J. Ma lone. Miss Bernardine Protivinsky en tertained a group of young people at her home on Sunday evening, in honor of her sister, Miss Eva, who left Monday for her new posi tion in Sioux Falls, S. D. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Degnan, of Buffalo Gap, S. D., who spent Christmas here at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James David son, returned to their home on Monday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Shoemaker and daughter drove up from Nor folk Saturday evening to spend Christmas at the home of Harold’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shoe maker. Clarence Saunto and Miss Mar garet Miller and Jean Rummel and Miss Marjorie Learner drove to Norfolk on Tuesday where they visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard McNally and other friends. Miss Marion Arbuthnot, who is a student at Ames, Iowa, returned there on Monday after spending Christmas visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Arbuthnot. Miss Geneieve Biglin and Am brose Biglin drove to Sioux City on Friday where they visited their sister, Sister Calixta, of Jackson, Nebraska, who at the present time is in St. Vincent’s hospital in Sioux City recovering from an operation. At the present time, she is recov ering nicely. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Ennis and Mrs. Ennis’ mother, Mrs. Lucinda Eveland drove to Chambers on Christmas day where they attended a family dinner at the home of theii granddaughter, and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. George L. Smith. There were 25 present at the din ner. Mother Cherbium, who has been the Mother Superior of St. Mary’s Academy here fog the past five years left Wednesday for Stella, New York, where she has been transferred. Mother Virginia, who was formerly Miss Loretta Sulli van, an O'Neill girl, has been ap pointed Mother, and will arrive shortly to take Mother Cherbium’s place as Mother Superior. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Mathews, and daughter, Madge, of Lincoln, Nebraska arrived Friday evening and spent Christmas at the home of her father, Dick Murray. Mr. I Mathews returned to Lincoln on | Monday, but will return to O’Neill for New Years, after which Mrs. j Mathews and daughter will return with him to Lincoln. Mrs. Ralph Oppen and Frances Connelly drove to Omaha Sunday to get Mr. Oppen, who had been in the University hospital re covering from an operation. He plans to remain here until he is fully recovered before returning ! to Omaha to continue his studies at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. Percy Watenpaugh drove to Grand Island last Friday where he met his mother, Mrs. A. E. Waten paugh, of Castle Rock, Washing ton, who will make an extended | visit here at the home of her son and family. On Christmas day, j Mr. and Mrs. Percy Watenpaugh and children and Mrs. A. E. Waten paugh, drove to the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Winkler north of Emmet and spent the day. Mr. and Mrs. Winkler are the parents j ; of Mr3. Percy Watenpaugh. William Drueke William Drueke, a farmer living in northern Holt county near Phoe nix, suffered a severe heart attack last Monday while helping to cut wood at the O’Neill farm home near Phofenix. He was taken to the Stuart Hospital, where his con dition became critical, and he pass ed away on Friday, December 23. Mr. Drueke was born at West Point, Nebraska, May 7, 1883, and passed away on December 23, 1938, at the age of 55 years, seven months and sixteen days. He was united in marriage to Miss Cath erine Fisher on February 26, 1908 at West Point, Nebraska and to this union five children were born all of whom, with his wife, and three sisters and one brother are left to mourn the passing of a kind and indulgent husband, father and brother. The children are Mrs. Arthur O’Neill, Spencer, Mrs. Bar nard Hynes, O’Neill, Oswald, At kinson, Jeanette, Atkinson and Leandrc, Atkinson. Mr and Mrs. Drueke moved to Holt county in 1919 from Cuniings county, and since that time had resided in the northern part of Holt county. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Cruch in O’Neill, Mon day, at ten o’clock, Rev. Walter Flynn officiating and burial in the Culvery cemetery. The Weather A forecast of much colder weather, followed by snow was made by the government fore casters for this area on Thursday morning. To date, this part of Ne braska has had little cold weather and practically no snow. A tract fell in the dust storm of Monday and some snow, with rain and sleet fell last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard McNally, of Norfolk, arived Saturday even ing and spent Christmas at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Rear don, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mc Nally. John Robert Glalagher re turned to Omaha Monday where he is attendnig Creighton University after spending the Christmas holwi days at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Gallagher. Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Morrison and daughter, Dorothy and son Jack left Sunday morning for Cas per, where they planned to spenc the holidays at the home of Mr and Mrs. Ed Davidson. R. M. Miss Marie Biglin and Ambrose Biglin drove to Sioux. City Wednesday where they visited Sister Calixta, who is in St. Vincent’s hospital there re covering from an operation. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Beha and child ren, of Minneapolis, Minn., whe celebrated Christmas here at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs Wm. Beha left Monday for their home. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Demahr, oi David City, Nebraska and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Reardon, of Cleveland Ohio were in O’Neill on Wednes day visii ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Hanna. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bussard re Best Wishes for a Happy, Prosperous New Year The Frontier turned Thursday from York, Ne braska where they had gone to seek an uncle of Mr*. Bussard, who was seriously injured in an auto I accident. K. A. Wehl, of Hays Center, Kansas, arrived Saturday and will spend the holidays visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Biglin. Mr. and Mrs. Gifford Bachman and family drove to Stuart, Ne braska on Christmas and spent the day at the home of Mr. Bachman’s parents. Clarence Selah returned Monday to his home in Grand Island after spending Christmas here at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Selah. Mr. and Mrs. John Kratchvil and children of Osmond, Nebraska, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Kersenbrock over the holi-, days. Miss Mary Jo Finley entertain ed ten couples at a dinner dance at the Golden Hotel on Tuesday evening, in honor of her sister, Miss Catherine Finley. Abe Sauunto left Friday for Columbus where he will spend the holidays with his daughter,' and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lohr. Jerry Clasen, who spent the week-end in O’Neill and Atkinson, visiting relatives and friends, returned to his home in Grand Is land Monday, Miss Grace Carlon," who has been here visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs William Hammond for the past month left Wednesday for her home in Pueblo, Colo. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Barnard and children left Wednesday for Cas per, Wyo., after spending the Christmas holidays at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Yantzi. Judge R. R. Dickson left Wed nesday for Lincoln where he will attend the annual convention of District Judges, now being held in that city. Mr. and Mrs. Ted McElhaney, daughter. Marjorie and son, Bruce left Wednesday morning for Omaha where they will visit rela tives and friends for a few days. Miss Patrice Robertson returned Tuesday morning to Sheldon, la., after spending the Christmas holi days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Robertson. Miss Mary Joan Finley, of Chi cago, arrived Friday ni"ht and will remain over the holiday season visiting at the home of her father, Dr. W. F. Finley. Floyd Sexton, of Clearwater, Mr. and Mrs. Si Jones and daughter, of Fremont, Mr. and Mrs*R. Kickoff, of Wisner were guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ira George during the holi days. Mr. and Mrs. Vance Kline and children drove to Norfolk Sunday morning and spent the balance of Christmas day at the home of his brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kline. Mrs. M. V. Nickolson, of Valen tine recently went to Los Angeles, Calif., to visit her son, Richard, who i has been ill. While there she be \ came ill and passed away Wednes j day. McManamy-Kubichek Miss Madeline Kubichek, daugh* ter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kubi chek of this city, and J. L. Mc Manamy, of Council Bluffs, Iowa were united in marriage on Mon day morning, December 26, 1938 at eleven-forty-five at the Catholic Parsonage by the Rev. Walter Flynn. Miss Miiiam Kubicheck, sister of the bride, and C. W. Mc Manamy, brother of the groom, of Council Bluffs, Iowa were the at tendants. The Bride wore a suez <’reoe dress with brown accessories, and wore a shoulder corsage of gardenias, and tea roses. The groom was attired in a black suit. The bridesmaid wore a tile blue dress with wine assessories, and a cor sage of tea roses. After the ceremony a wedding pinner was served at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kubicheck. The table was beautifully decorated with a large cake as the center piece. The bride and groom left im mediately after the dinner for a weeks visit with relatives and friends in Omaha and Council Bluffs, Iowa. They will be at home, after Jan uary 3 to all of their friends in the Naylor apartments. The Frontier joins with the many friends of the happy couple in wishing them a long and pros perous wedded life. PROJECT CLUBS The Busy Hour club was enter tained at the home of Zillah Mil ler on December 22. All members responded to roll call with a poem appropriate to the season. New officers elected for the com ing year were Ruby Wayman, president; Linda Wayman, Secre tary; Alvina Wayman. Terasurer; Zillah Miller, news reporter. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent playing games and distri buting Christmas gifts. Lizzie Schmohr won the prize. Linda Wayman received a birthday gift. A delicious luncheon was served by the hostess consisting of sand wiches, pickles, dessert and coffee. The next meeting will be held at the home cf Ruby Wyman on Jan uary 26". Mr. and Mrs. A1 Broderson spent Christmas at the home of Mrs. Broderson’s parents in Neligh. Rev. C. A. Byesdorfer, of St. John’s Parish, Deloit, was in O’Neill on Wednesday on business. John Dailey, of Winner, S. D., was a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Biglin over Christmas. Lyle Gatenby spent Christmas at the home of his parents in Ne ligh, Nebraska. Herb Schroeder left Saturday for Bloomfield and spent the holi days there with his parents. Chris Moore, the new meat cut ter at the Council Oak Store spent Christmas with his mother at Mc Lean, Nebraska. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Reardon, of Omaha, arrived Saturday night and spent Christmas day at the home of Mr. nd Mrs. H. J. Reardon. Frank J. O’Donnell arrived Sat urday from Dallas, Texas, and wi.l spend the holiday season here vis iting relatives and friends Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bright, of Orchard were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. Miss Ruby Weiseman left Friday for her home at Oscela, Nebraska, where she spent Christmas at the home of her parents. Mrs. Helen Simar spent Christ mas day in Atkinson visiting rela tives, and then spent Monday in Bassett, Nebraska. Miss Marjorie Learner left Fri day for Wayne, Nebraska where she spent Christmas at the home of her parents. Miss Monica Mannion left Sat urday for Creighton, where she spent Christmas at the home of her parents. Miss Blanch Collins, of Wayne, Nebraska, drove to O’Neill Sunday night and was a guest at the home of Mrs. Theresa Connelly. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Nelson and daughter, Nancy Jo, arrived Sat urday and spent Christmas at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. 11. J. Reardon. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Ruzicka re turned Tuesday from Redfield, S. D. where they spent Christmas at the home of Mrs. Ruzicka’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Sell. Erwin Cronin and James Tuor, of Grand Island arrived Saturday and spent Christmas at the home of Mr and Mrs. P. B. Harty. They returned home Monday. Dr. Frank Gallagher, of La Crose, Wisconsin, who spent Christmas here at the home of his mother, Mrs. Winifred Gallagher, returned to his home on Tuesday. Miss Marie Biglin, of Salt Lake Ci*v. Utah, arrived Saturday and will sneml the holiday season here visiting at the home of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Biglin. December 31 Deadline For Saving On Taxes Holt County delinquent tax pay ers can save themselves many hunderds of dollars in interest by paying their taxes on or before next Saturday. The law permitt ing cancellation of interest on taxes delinquent when the law went Into effect March, 1937, expires or December 31, 1938. After that date, delinquent interest, that is inter est charged against the property prior to March, 1937, as well as in terest after that date will have to be paid. And as in many cases the delinquent interest amounts to or exceeds the original tax, it be hooves all delinquent tax payers to make a visit to the County Trea surer’s office before December 31* 1938. Births Mr. and Mrs. Bart Mallory an nounce the birth of a son on Mon day, December 26th. Marriage Licenses A marriage license was issued by County Judge C. J. Malone on December 24th to Raymond Purr, of Albion and Merle Townsend, of Loretto, Nebraska. The marriage ceremony was performed on the same date by the Rev. Virgil Wright of the Methodist church of this city. Free Puppet Show We wish to announce the pre sentation of a sensational puppet show, THE JEWEL TREE. It is to be given in the K. of C. Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Johnson re turned Tuesday from Omaha where they had spent Christmas day vis iting at the home of relatives and friends. Vincent Schoburg returned Sun day night from Spencer, where he spent Christmas day visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Scho burg. Miss Eileen Davidson, of Omaha, arrived Friday night and will spend the holiday season here visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mis. Jim Davidson. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Ward left Saturday for Winner, S. D., where they spent Christmas at the home of Mr. Ward’s father and grand parents. Mrs. J. S. Enis entertained her Sunday school class at her home last Wednesday night, Connie Lou Williams as honored guest. The following were in attendance, Et hel Hinze, Shirley Claussen, Hat tie Cruse. Betty Jane Ernst, Mar garet Thavet, Maxine Wilkinson, Della Hagensick, Bonnie Beth Yer nell, Betty Harris, and Phylis Johnson. They enjoyed themselves playing cards and singing Christ mas Carols.
