Britain is now embarked on a vast program of rearmament in the navy, army and royal air force. Headliners in Lima Pan-American Parley Alfred M. Landon, 1936 Republican presidential candidate, has been named as one of this country’s representatives at the Pan-American conference in Lima, Peru. Appointment of the former Kansas governor by President Roosevelt was regarded by some students of political affairs as an example to nations who do not countenance two-party systems or presidential opposition. The money was divided among the workers according to the number of years each had worked for the concern. MASSIVE TOY This giant locomotive is a big toy for so small a fellow, but Paul Del Rio, smallest man in the world, has a grand time as he rides the head light of this engine on a visit to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. He is only 19 inches tall and weighs 12 pounds. Language Used by Many Malay, the simple commercial language of the East Indies, has spread so widely that 40 nationalities speak it to the exclusion of their mother tongues. Annual Goober Derby Draws National Cbamps Twenty-five national peanut-pushing champs rooted for honors in an Edcnton, N. C., race, celebrating the opening of the largest Tar Heel market. Schnoxsle snubbers of adhesive tape were Invented to prevent wear and tear caused by friction. Best of the goober racers was James Small, 6 foot 5 inch high school student who won the race by a nose. Czech soldiers »re now helping scores of farmers plow their fields. Here is one working in a field near Prague. During the crisis a widespread shortage of labor resulted in help from the army. Ray Gordon of St. Louis just missed Joining another army—the army of the unemployed—when he was fired from a WPA road Job. His fellow workers, who believed he had not been treated fairly, agreed to contribute a nickel a day each until he received the regular WPA wage of $56 a month. He provided the shovel himself. Air-Raid Shelters Will Protect London Workmen have completed one of the trenches dug on the grounds of the Imperial War museum in London during the war scare that preceded the Munich pact. Authorities will maintain the trenches as a permanent air-raid shelter in the event of future war. Safety measures of all kinds have been widely inaugurated throughout all of England as well as London. Father and Son Attend College Together Cecil (left) and Carrol Lowe, his son, are both students at McKendrce college in Lebanon, 111. The father, formerly a farmer and now a Method ist minister, nad only a grammar school education in his youth. Desirous of further education, he began an eight-year high school correspondence course which he completed two years ago. WHISTLING CHAMPION Arlene Lomas, four-year-old New York city miss, is the winner of a gold medal and the champion of the city’s whistlers under eight years of age. She won the title at the city’s first annual whistling contest sponsored by the department of parks. SEA VOYAGE ENDS Frank E. Clark, 54-year-old Eng* lish-American sailor, docks in Sa vannah, Ga., after a thrilling solo voyage from England in a second hand 30-foot fishing boat. The voy age took three months, with Sailor Clark running through one hurri cane. A Marathon Clock In Saugus, Mass., there is a fifty five-year-old clock, which, accord ing to its possessors, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McDonald, never has run down and always has kept good time.
