Lewis went down to defeat in the Pennsylvania primary and with him went a lot of the prestige of James A. Farley, postmaster general and boss of the democratic political machine. Their favored candidate for governor was slaughtered by the Pennsylvania voters. The election brought en couragement to the republicans as they cast about 200,000 more votes in the primary than the democrats and all defeated republican candi dates have pledged their support to the successful candidates.
