Hayden Brothers store in Omaha,
for fifty-three years one of the
stalwart business enterprises of
that city, is voluntarily retiring
from business. They have rented
their store building to the J. C.
Penney company ,who will occupy
it as soon as the present stock is
disposed of.
Walter Fick, the Inman light
heavyweight champion of the Oma
ha Golden Gloves contest, lost a
decision to Joe Murdock, colored
Detroit fighter, at Chicago last
Tuesday night. The papers say
it was a mauling contest all the
way thru and Fick acquitted him
self with credit.

lawyer of Pierce,- died at his home
in that city Monday, the funeral
being held Wednesday. Mr. Cones

in the banking business at Pierce
for over fifty years.
On March 1, some of the highway
patrol districts in the state were
consolidated. In this section of the
state the office at Madison has been
abandoned and the work will be
handled by the patrolmen stationed
at West Point and O’Neill.
Governor Cochran announced
Wednesday that he would again be
a candidate for the democratic
nomination for governor at the
coming primary election and that
he would file shortly. This, we
think is the first time a governor
of the state has filed for the third
successive term for the office of
governor.
March was ushered in Tuesday
as a lamb, mild and meek. Will the
old time-worn adage that when
March comes in like a lamb it will
go out like a lion, hold true. If so,
we can look for a lot of nasty
w'eather the latter part of the
month. The snow is all gone and
the ground has absorbed all the
moisture which puts it in pretty
good shape for spring planting.
The O'Neill office of the state
employment service was closed on
Feb. 22, and hereafter this will be
looked after by the Norfolk office,
according to word received from
there by this office. They suggest
that applicants and employees
write to them at Norfolk, if they

The O’Neill Women’s Club met
Wednesday at the home of Mrs.
George Miles. Miss Anna O’Don
nell reviewed “The Citadel,” by
A. J. Cronin, which was enjoyed
by those present. Next months
meeting will be at the home of Mrs.
C. J. Malone. Mrs. Peter Todsen
will be the reviewer.
A Wisner man was tried before a
jury in the county court at
West Point, Nebr., last Thursday
for driving an automobile while in
toxicated. He was convicted and
fined $20 and costs and had his
driver’s license revoked for one
year. The arrest was made by
one of the state patrolmen. It is
believe that this is the first case
in the state in which a defendant,
arrested on the charge of drunken
driving, was tried to a jury before
the county court.
Harry Hiscock, who has been a
resident of the northeastern part
of the county for the past forty
five years, was an O’Neill visitor
last Friday. Harry had a sale of
his personal effects last week and
was to leave the middle of this
week for Oregon where he expects
to make his future home. He has
a son who has been in Oregon the
past two years and he likes the
country fine and Harry determined
to try it. He said that if he was
not satisfied, however, he would
come back to old Holt. Harry’s
many friends hope that he will find
prosperity and contentment in his
new home.
