    THE NEBRASKA
SCENE
(Continued from page 7.)
inp Superintendent Saunders de
clares, with the weak banks weeded
out and only the strong ones left.
Governor Cochran announced
last week that there ia a deal on
to clean up the existing bank re
ceiverships thru their sale to the
RFC, and the use of the money to
pay off depositors immediately.
This would benefit depositors doub
ly, the governor said, by giving
them their money at once, and
eliminating much of the expense
that would have to be paid to ad
minister the receiverships, thus
giving the depositors a large re
turn out of the assets.
Despite the frigid weather which
paralyzed business in February and
caused passenger automobile sales
in Nebraska to drop sharply under
the same month in 1935, truck
sales in this state totaled 586, com
pared with 385 in February a year
ago.
Government bonds to the amount
of $1,200,000 purchased in 1931 by
T. W. Bass, then state treasurer,
now have a market value far in
excess of what the state paid, and
there has been earned for the state
approximately $150,000 in interest
in excess of a possible premium
upon the bonds themselves. Dr.
Bass, now a candidate for nomina
tion as state treasurer on the re
publican ticket, points to this one
service alone as being many times
in excess of the actual cost of op
erating the state treasury.
The state normal board reports
it now has 52 buildings and land
totaling $3,358,260 in value. The
Chadron institution is worth $750,
000; Wayne, $1,018,310; Peru, $1,
030,000; and Kearney $659,950, The
bugs in the ointment of the board
during the past year were termites
which made it necessary to do con
sideable repair work to buildings
at Kearney and Peru.
