' John Frerick moved Monday to Garfieki county. De Los Withers of Atkinson is moving in when the Frerkkg go out. r This winter has been an eloquent argument for changing the school term in rurdl districts to summer months. A South Dakota farmer lost $1,200 in a card game an<| a Ne braska farmer contributed $600 to the same sharks. CoTn-fiog money ? Raymond Bly found it necessary to shovel snow for 40 rods getting to the school house with his little son on April 1. It was the last trip that week. Eighty-four traffic fatilities over the week-end indicates the recent spasm to eliminate car crashes have not had, the desired results. Queer tilings become embodied into Igw, . The Platte, with a background of romance and history, is fast being despoiled by reser- j voirs, canals, power projects and j vast engineering projects of dopbt- j ful value. The great hay and ag-1 ricultural section of the Platte has been impoverished that the natural cattle grazing end of the valley might transfer from beef to beets, j Tremain Van Valkenburg, a pio- j neer of Inman precinct, is credited with making the first bale of hay in Holt county. Thousands of cars of hay have been taken out of the Inman valley since the day that first bale was tied and the Elkhorn hay has always stood at the top of the list. The predecessor of the modern stacker and hay sweep were devised and first put to prac tical use in that same community. The first “horseless carriage” in Holt county was the handiwork of an O’Neill jew'eler, B. F. Cole. It consisted of the running gear of a buggy with a platform to which sails were attached. The wind fanned regularly and no fences in terfered. A few trips were made with this contrivance into the South Fork valley where its inventor had a claim.
