PORTER, City Clerk. FIVE CONGRESS—AS SEEN BY A NEBRASKAN By Kgrl Stefan Washington social life goes on in spite of “hell and high water.” Wars and rumors of wars or floods lapping at the "very feet of the White House fail to disrupt the mad whirl of eritertaining in this nation’s eapitol. Cocktail parties, dances, teas, banquets and dinners seem to attract more attention than serious legislation which is being discussed in orddr to eliminate the depression. The town is “in the money” and it stems as if every body in every country of the world and in every state iri the Union knows it, because a close investiga tion of the city’s inside life shows that the people in this eapitol are living and doing a lot of entertain ing. Everybody Seems to be in a hurry to do something. It is even hard to get an appointment with the chief of one of the smallest de-! partments without giving many hours or days advance application for such an appointment. Visitors coming from home are bewildered, and wonder what it is all about. The chain store lobbyists are here fighting against the Robinson Patman bill which is a bill to give the independent merchant a chance to compete with the great chain organizations. In their argument against this bill, these chain store lobbyists say it might increase the cost of living to consumers, but they neglect to say anything about the recently published income tax returns which show that some of these gigantic stores pay some of their heads of departments over $100,000 a year each. Many Nebraska people are here today, all of them interested in some kind of legislation. Former | Governor Bryan is here, and he was ] the guest of honor at a banquet given in memory of the late Wil liam Jennings Bryan. Governor Cochran is also here, interested in various legislation. Walter Christ ianson, editor of the Omaha World Herald, accompanied by his wife, was a recent arrival. Most of the Nebraskans who are here, come from Omaha, and working on leg islation effecting that city. Many of them are interested in a river bridge; some of them are railroad men and representatives of com munity organizations working for and against the long and short haul bill, which is being debated on the floor of the house. Those favoring the bill say that it will give the railroads an opportunity to com pete with steamships which are subsidized by the taxpayers. They say the farmer in the middle west has lost his market for grain and corn because the steamships can haul it cheaper thru the Panama Canal, and on the water; and under present conditions, the railroads cannot compete with these cheap freight rates. They claim that this legislation will give them an op portunity to compete with the wat er rates, and again restore the market for the middle states farm er on the coast. Those opposing :he bill state that it may give the railroad an opportunity to charge more for short hauls than they do for long hauls, but the proponents ?tate that the Interstate Commerce Commission will continue in their power over rates, and will make it impossible for the railroads to work a hardship against the short hauls. When Mike complained that the horse was blind Pat said, “That isn’t his fault, that’s his misfor tune!” If the voters pick the wrong man it probably is not their fault but it is likely to be their misfortune. I believe the 28th district which is purely agricultural, should be served in the legislature by a farmer who has been and is taking it on the chin with the rest of us. I believe I can meet the problems of the businessman, the work ingman, and all others with sympathy and understanding as well. If justice satisfies you we will get along. I don’t claim to b£ so darn good, but if I knew of a better man running for this job I would be out working for him. VOTE ROBERT E. TOMLINSON - Jpyijufe * '.V.' 14 W '* at the Primaries, Tuesday, April 14th full information about the flood damage, and learning that all re lief work is well underway. How ever, he did not leave until he had made a two hour inspection tour of the flood area in Washington. On his way back from the river Friday he sat in his automobile and signed a Nebraska bill for Senator Norris. This bill provides for establishment of the Freeman homestead near Beatrice, Nebr., as a National park. The high water has left this vi cinity and behind it tons and tons of debris, and a visit there shows a covering of mud over everything. The flood waters have left a ter rible odor in their wake, and people here are warned against the impur ity of the water. Many of the scenes here resemble the scenes around the Elkhorn river, especial-1 ly around Norfolk years ago when 1 that river went out of it’s banks during flood time. Some members of the house who are close to the committee endeav-j oring to fix up the new tax bill, ‘ now figure it might raise around $792,000,000 of new taxes, and figuring on that basis, this amount would run the government about twenty-five days. Some of the of ficials close to the administration saj that in the next fifteen months our national debt will reach $35r 000,000,000. Others figure it will be about $40,000,000,000. The committee on education com pleted hearings on the vocational training bill, but they are not to take final action until next week. The bill carries an authorized ap propriation of about twelve million dollars, as compared with about three million dollars last year. Sev eral features have been placed, ip the new bill which will permit ex pansion in some instruction so as to make it possible to teach young men and women how to earn their own living after leaving high school and college. The senate has an amendment in a similar bill which would permit some training of city officials; fire departments; police departments, and while th^s amendment was not acted on fav orably by the house committee, the (Continued on page 8, column 4.)
