He’s the Father of Five Sets of Twins
Whenever the doctor came to attend a birth at the Harry Fitield
menage, at Putnam, Conn., he seemed aware of the fact that he would
have to do double duty. Five times the stork arrived and each time he
brought two children. The five sets of twins—In a row—is considered
somewhat of a record in the United States. One pair is not shown here.
They arrived Just recently. Left to right nre Harry Fifleld, Benny.

Through the Snowbank for Losing Tug-o’-War
0
These recruits of the One Hundred Seventeenth company of the Civilian Conservation corps of Tam
worth, N. H., are shown getting a snowy bath as they are hauled through a lii-foot snow bank. This was their
penalty for losing a tug-o’-war to the regulars of the company, during the winter sports program enjoyed by
the campers.

Hoax Starts Arizona Gold Rush
>
One of the most gigantic hoaxes in the history of Arizona was engi
neered by Charles Williams of Phoenix when he started a new gold
rush. The miner came out of the mysterious Superstitious mountains
after he had been missing 85 hours. With him he brought 12 ounces of
pure gold, which he said he found in a rich cache. Later investigation and
assaying proved that the gold was dental gold and melted down coins.
Williams has admitted his fraud. Left to right: Charles Williams; Ed
l»ayton, prospector into whose camp Williams stumbled as he emerged
from the mountains; and Officer Guss DobrinskI, Inspecting one of the
gold “nuggets.”
MARK TWAIN BEACON
The Mark Twain beacon light at
Hannibal, Mo., was recently lighted
when President Roosevelt turned a
golden key at Washington. The
lighting of the beacon started the
year’s celebration of the Mark
Twain centennial in the little town
where Mark Twain spent his boy
hood.

Old Age Pensions
Does Lashing Do Good?
Those Cosmic Rays
6,000-Year-Old Graves
Financial conservatism Is agi
tated because old-age pensions as
planned, moderately, by the Presi
dent, would cost one billion dollars
a year. Conservatism might better |
worry about Doctor Townsend’s ;
plan to give two hundred dollars a
mouth to everybody past sixty years
of age, nnd cost at least twenty
four thousand millions a year.
Conservatism might ulso worry
about billions spent uselessly In
state, national or local government
costs, and taxes that run above
thirteen thousand million dollars a
year.
At Wilmington, Del., three young
men, eighteen, twenty nnd twenty
three years old. were lashed In pub
lic, a crowd of one hundred look
ing on.
After the lashing, on the bnre
back, the youths began ten-year
prison sentences for burglary. The
lash frightens criminals more thnn
Imprisonment, as was proved In
London, where an epidemic of “gar
rotting” ended as soon as the lash
was used. But what will be the
mental state of those young men
when they leave prison after long
association with experienced crim
inals, and constant brooding on the
humiliation nnd pain of the lash
ing?
Can It he hoped that they will
he reformed, or be anything except
confirmed criminals, nnd enemies
of society?
A learned German says he has
discovered the source of “cosmic
rays” that bombard all space, con
stantly passing through your body,
although you don’t know It, driven
by the terrific energy of billions
of volts. The professor suggests
that the bombardment may occa
sionally break down a few of the
atoms In the human body, thus
slowly changing heredity.
That sounds like a great deal
of trouble, to change heredity,
which depends, really, on the right
girl choosing the right kind of
father for her children.
Doctor Sukenlk, professor of
archeology in the Hebrew Univer
sity of Jerusalem, has discovered
graves six thousand years old, that
go far back of Moses and Job and
others well known.
These graves were dug, and filled,
long before the Jewish nation hnd
made Jerusalem their principal city,
when other, earlier races Inhabited
the site of "old Jerusalem.”
Talking Into a telephone In the
White House, with amplifiers at the
other end, the President greeted
sir hundred members of the Hol
land society, at dinner In New
York. He felt pride in contribu
tions made to this country by the
men of Holland through three hun
dred years. The Roosevelts are of
Dutch origin, but unlike his dis
tant , cousin, Theodore Roosevelt,
the President did not recite any
childish Dutch poems about cows
In “the kopjes." To know what the
old Hollanders really were, as fight
ers and “stayers,” read Motley.
Names that sound strange to
Western ears figure tn the ease of
Tony Fon Lew, “Chinese doll
bride.” She and her alleged fa
ther, Mr. Gin Lem, are accused of
arranging marriages, taking money,
and then not marrying.
Mr. Knck Lew Gee, angry Chi
nese merchnnt, says he paid $1,800
to marry the toy bride, but got no
bride. Other Interesting names fig
ure In a discussion that almost
caused war between the Los An
geles Hop Sing Tong and the Four
Families Association.
Chinese names sound strange to
our eurs, but Jones or Robinson
would sound ridiculous to the Chi
nese. Fon Lew and her pretended
father ran away to China, but will
be brought back and Gin Lem will
be tried for violating the Mann act.
The Saar plebiscite, ns was cer
tain in advance, proves to be su
perficially u victory for Hitler. In
reality. It proves the devotion of
Germans to Germany under any
conditions.
With the population of the Saar
more than 95 per cent German,
voters were asked whether they
wished once more to resume Ger
man citizenship, throw In their lot
with France, or remain suspended
In the air us wards of the League
of Nations. It was certain that
Germans would vote for Germany.
Our national defense authorities
are delighted because n great Amer
ican navy plane labeled XP2H-1
flew nonstop to the Canal Zone from
Norfolk, 2,000 tulles. In 25 hours.
Amelia Earhart recently flew 2,400
mile In 19 hours, alone, without
sleep.
And a Russian plane has flown
7,500 miles nonstop.
Uncle Sam, to eotial Russia, need
only multiply that 2,000-mlle non
stop flight by three, and add 1,500
miles to the total.

CHURCH THRIVES
ON ROYAL GIFTS
Famous Old Trinity Endowed
by Two Monarchs.
In 16U7, when some of his An
glican subjects were worshiping In a
tort neur the Itattery, King William
III ot England gave young Trinity
parish the land ou which Trinity
church now stands at the head oi
Wall street. There was uo street
then, Inn a wall, later razed to give
the little city on Manhattan Island
room to grow l.ater, tin* royal heart
was struck with the thought that the
struggling church could well do with
some funds, and he gave the parish
the right to sell all whales, wrecks
and flotsam and jetsam flung up on
Long Island.
What revenue, If any. Trinity de
rived from that privilege has not
been discovered. At any rate, the
parish did not prosper fast enough
for Queen Anne, and In 170.r> she be
stowed on it a tract of land, which
became known as the Queen’s farm.
It yielded a revenue of £40 a year.
As the thriving city began to
spread out on Its narrow terrain,
the Queen's farm became covered
with rent-paying buildings. Subways
underran It in later years, and rents
went up. Though large slices of the
farm were taken to provide for oth
er Episcopal churches, King's col
lege, now Columbia university, and
other buildings, the little church at
the head of Wall street had 7(H) lots
remaining, and prospered until It be
came the wealthiest church in New
York, und, probably, In the country.
Recently the parish sold the east
side of Hudson street from West
oustou to Clarkson street, part
of the tract It received 2117 years ago
from King William. The transfer
marked the first change In owner
ship of this particular property since
the royal grant. Four and five
story buildings cover the block In
