EXCAVATION SHOWS HOLT
COUNTY WAS ONCE THE
HOME OF MANY INDIANS
(Continued from page 2.)
There were questions of tribal rights
and territorial division for hunting
purposes had to be ironed out. At
times, those tribes in dispute were
ordered to meet at the line and talk
things over. In every case, both sides
mustered every warrior available and
loaded them down with enough weap
ons to cow the other side, if possible.
If an offered indemnity failed after an
infringment was proved, tomahawks
slipped out of concealment and there
was a battle then and there. It was
part of the rules of the game that the
first tribe to run away lost the cause
for which they fought and that ended
the struggle for the desired land or
rights.
