    Half a Million Returned by Hoarders
If you have ever wondered what $.r>00,000 looks like,
take a Rood look at this picture. All those little sacks
are jammed full of tfold coins which were returned
to the vaults of the Fidelity Trust Company in New
ark, N. J., by hoarders who responded to Uncle Sara s
plea A flood of the precious metal has poured back
into the banks of the nation in the last few days, due
to the threat of Federal proceedings.
Chosen Queen of Beauty
Meet Queen Esther of 1933! She is Miss Katherine Spector, of Bayonne,
N. J., who was chosen ns the nr^ttiest Jewish girl in America from an
entry of 300 beautiful girls. Miss Spector, who is nineteen, is a piano
teacher and a vocal student. She will be given a free trip to Palestine
as the reward of her victory.

If you hate a leaning towards
equestrian pursuits, here is the last
word in clothes for the occasion,
according to Peggy Hopkins Joyce,
screen player. Over a yellow,
turtle-neck sweater, she wears a
brown suede jumper. The jodhpurs
are of beige whipcord, and the boot/
are brown cordovan leather.
Chicago Mayor
Frank J. Corr, who was elected to
act as temporary Mayor of Chicago
to succeed the late Mayor Anton J.
Cermak. Corr, who has had much
experience as an Alderman, will
hold office until an election can be
called. He is a Democrat, and was
a close friend of his late prede
cessor.

nounced. Miss McCarver, who is a
daughter of Wilburn McCarver, at
tended the Kidd-Key College, Sher
man, Texas, where she became in
terested in amateur theatricals.
She later appeared in several prom,
inent Broadway productions.
Set New Records
Katherine Rawls, of Miami Beach,
Fla., who was the youngest mem
ber of Uncle Sam’s Olympic team
last Summer, has garnered a few
more laurels to her already impos
ing wreath. At the indoor meet
staged by the Atlantic Seaboard
Association in Coral Cables, Fla.,
recently Miss Rawls broke the rec
ords for the 300-yards medley and
the 220-yards free style.
On "Miracle” Quest
Robert L. Ripley, whose amazing
“Believe-it-or-Not” cartoons have
gained him world-wide fame, pic
tured as he sailed from New York
on the liner Re* in an extensive
hunt for new material. Rip will
travel through Africa and across
the Atlantic hy air to South Amer
ica, covering more than 15,OOP
miles on his quest.

Holiday Bargains on Campus
Even the girls in Wellesley College felt the pinch for ready cash during
the recent banking holiday, and here is one method they evolved for
keeping the wolf from the door. The bulletin board at which Miss
Margery Muncaster is directing her attention here is ornamented with
notices of articles for sals. The girls disposed of some of their spargr
garments to tide them over.
Plane Roosting on Roof-Top
Matrimony had nothing to do with Jerry Lor.gbardi ‘settling down on
the roof of this house at Brooklyn, N. Y, Pilot Longbardi found he had
no alternative when his motor went dead while on a flight from Floyd
P.ennett Airport. And despite the dangerous-looking perch, neither th*
pilot, the plane nor the house was hurt in the accident.
Stage Missed Ihis Miss
Not all beauty contest winners end up in the theatre or in Hollywood.
Priscilla Cole, for instance, who won the title of Miss Scituate in a
Massachusetts beauty contest, was recently appointed postmistress at
Greenbush, Mass., by Postmaster General Farley. She is shown at her
new duties.
