MART CORRIGAN KAISER
IS CALLED BY DEATH
(Atkinson Graphic)
Mrs. Mary Corrigan Kaiser, 80,
who came to Holt county with the
pioneering Corrigan family 58 years
ago, passed away Wednesday at the
home of her brother, Joe Corrigan,
three miles southeast of Atkinson.
Mrs. Kaiser took ill suddenly Tues
day evening.
Funeral services will he held in the
Emmet Catholic church this morning
at 10 o’clock, conducted by the Rev.
M. F. Byrne. Burial will he made in
St. Joseph’s cemetery, in the family
lot.
Mary Corrigan was born in Coun
ty Tyrone, near the town of Glen
gean, Ireland, in 1861. When a young
girl she came to America with the
family and in 1877 came with them
to Holt county, Nebraska to live.
Forty years ago she was married
in Omaha to John Kaiser and she
made her homo in that city, during
its various stages of growth and
progress, until the death of her hus
band in 1918. Kse then came back to
Holt county and made her home with
her brothers Joe and William at At
kinson, who together with two other
brothers, Barney of Page and Mike
of Kansas City, Mo., survive her. A
number of nieces and nephews also
mourn her death.
PI MP IRRIGATION PRO\ INC
SUCCESSFUL IN NEBRASKA
(Sioux City Journal)
The semi-arid nature of Nebraska,
emphasized by the present unpreced
ented period of drouth, is doing more
for flood control and irrigation pro
motion than spellbinders could have
accomplished in 50 years. Pump ir
rigation is being investigated and ex
perimented with in many sections of
the state.
Flood control irrigation will be
available to the fortunate few own
ing acres along low, level valleys.
The majority will have to look to the
earth's water storehouse for water
that somehow has failed to drop
from the skies.
in me upper riaue river valley,
pump water irrigation is an old
story. Every well has proved itself
an unfailing fountain of liquid gold.
Like all new ideas, other sections are
lolling along in the old way while
crops wither to waste year after
year. Here and there deep wells dug
at great expense have failed to de
liver sufficient water to flood crops.
These are exceptions. Most holes
yield more than enough water to
soak one man’s crops.
In western Holt county, near Stu
art, there are five giant wells having
24-inch casing and capable of yield
ing about 1,000 gallons of water per
minute. These are rated to cover an
acre of ground with plenty of water
in 77 minutes. Some of these wells
arc down 63 feet. Water is pumped
from them by a common purpose
tractor. Batenhorst brothers, of near
Stuart, are watering 100 acres of as
fine looking corn as ever stood. Po
tatoes and alfalfa also are soaked on
this farm.
According to Joseph Batenhorst,
an unlimited supply of water is not
necessary for irrigation. He says
rains may be depended upon except
ing a few weeks in July and August
and that often one good pump water
soaking a season is all that is neces
sary to produce a bountiful crop.
The Batenhorsts expect to harvest
from GO to 70 bushels of corn this
fall.
Not always is pump water suitable
for the irrigation of crops. Alkali
and other detrimental substances are
often present to kill or stunt vegeta
tion. Only in a few localities are
those harmful substances present in
water.
Roughly, pump irrigation costs
about $1 per acre. Those irrigating
with pump water don’t care if drouth
does send corn to $5 per bushel.
