MR. AND MRS. ARTHUR SMITH CELEBRATE FIFTIETH . WEDDING ANNIVERSARY (Inman Leader.) The fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith, residing south of Inman, was celebrated last Monday evening when about seventy five invited guestte assembled at their home and spent a few enjoyable hours with this worthy pioneer couple. Fifty years ago October 8, at the foot of the Catskill mountains in Green county, N. Y., Mr. and Mrs. Smith were united in marriage. In the spring of 1880 they came bo Ne braska, settling upon a homestead K three ni’les south of Inman where they have since resided. Their little two room home was the first $rame house plastered in Holt county. Here is where their children were reared to manhood and womanhood, and while we bring offerings of praise to every citizen of this great land, we especially pay tribute to the pioneers who made their way into the vast and pathless prairie; the great middle west. With the onward, westward flow of civiliza tion from the prosperous cities and gramladen fields of the eastern state, went this noble pioneer couple, to share with each other the solitude and silence of the broad and barren ex panse of inland prairies, and to render their part in the settlement and de velopment of a democratic civiliza tion. They did not come in the noon day *of triumphant achievement; when the plow had furrowed the sod; when fields were heavy with grain, and when the schools and churches betoken the dwelling place of a happy and pros perous people. They came when the prairies glared'in the heat of the sun; when danger, death and disease stalk ed abroad; when neighbors were few and when hearts ached for the fellow ship of old companions. They watched and in painful silence prayed, and if death in the family came, laid it as the first sleeper in the new made ceme tery. Three children, two of whom are alive, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a son, Forrest, who lies in this vicinity, and a daughter, Mrs. Merten, who resides at Wakefield, Nebraska, v^ere both present on this occasion. Among the presents received were $22.50 in gold (pieces, two gold rings, gold pen knife, gold spoon tray, gold butter knife, many boquets of flowers, letters, greeting cards and telegrams. At 11 o’clock a two course luncheon was served. , Those from a distance in attendance were? Rev. and Mrs. Merten, of Wakefield; Mr. and Mrs. Trowbridge, Page; and Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Tomp kins, Albion. SCHOOL NOTES. Second Grade. The Eighth grade is still spelling for head marks. Amelia Saunto won the headmark Thursday, Ruth Scott Friday and Monday; while Frank Ma » ben went to the head Tuesday. The class is progressing quite rapidly in agriculture. They are now studying the grains and have made some seed tests. % NOTICE. The Literary department of the Wo man’s Club met at the club room Wed neday afternoon, with Mrs. George Longstaff, leader. A musical number, by the three Wier sisters of St. Mary’s Academy, ,was skillfully rendered and highly ap preciated by the club. Mrs. C. J. Malone’s review of the “Book of Job” proved to be a most ex cellent success. It was a plain straightforward reasoning from stem to stern, and was thoroughly enjoyed by her hearers. The book carries with it certain messages, consisting of one or two simple statements or truths, and is most worthy of a thoughtful perusal. Mrs. W. C. Templeton, through her paper, gently1 pulled aside the curtain arid gavfc us a felimps^ of the weird stage setting for this beautiful poem thereby, bringing the characters and the audience into closer touch. A wonderfully strong and sincere portrayal of the characters of Job and hb three close friends was ably handled by the “Misses” Latta, Dono hoe, Malone, and by Mrs. W. P. Curtis. In Mrs. Longstaff’s discussion and criticism of the work, every argument was advanced in striking conciseness and logical sequence, and much was found to suggest reflection and not a little to compel agreement. Many interesting facts pertaining to the character of Job were brought out through the research work of Mrs. J. II. Wise and Mrs. Chas. Petti john. Next meeting of this department will be November 7th. M. E. CHURCH NOTES. Revival meetings will begin Sunday. Evangelist O. O. Wood, of Haigler, Nebraska, will preach two sermons Sunday, 10:30 a. m. and 7:30 p. m. May we have a crowded church at both i these services. Services every evening throughout the week at 7:30 o’clock. Everyone is cordially invited to attend all services. 1 Rev. Zell Bressler, of Niobrara, a former member of this church, was with us last Wednesday evening at prayer meeting and gave a splendid address. Mrs. Graver, of Niobrara, sang a couple of solos to the great delight of the audience. The Ladies Aid will hold their meet and iServ* lunch in the church dining room on Thursday, The Hus bands are invited to take lunch with the ladies this week. , We are glad to see such a good in terest and attendance shown in the Sunday school, yet we ought to do better. May we see a larger number present Sunday. The Epworth League devotional meeting was well attended last Sun day, so many new faces were seen in the crowd. We hope this good work will continue.
