AN EARLY SETTLER ALONG NIOBRARA, DIES (Spencer Advocate) Ed. L. Whiting, an old resident and well known throughout north Nebras ka and southern South Dakota, died at his home fn this city at 2:30 Tuesday morning, January 30th. "He was 74 years old. Mr. Whiting had been ill with com plications since September, being con fined to his home. His condition be coming serious a few weeks ago. He was a man of wonderful vitality for one of his age. Twice within the past four years he has suffered an operation for the removal of both lower limbs. Mr. Whiting was a veteran of the Civil war, and later came west as a soldier in the regular army and was stationed at Ft. Randall. There he was married and about forty years ago took up a homestead south of Spencer, on the Niobrara river, when it was a part of Dakota. His life is full of history of this part of the country. He is survived by his widow, five sons and three daughters. Funeral services were held this morning from St. Mary’s Catholic church and was largely attended by old friends and neighbors. GROSS STATE BANK CLOSES ITS DOORS (Spencer Advocate) The Gross State Bank failed to open for business last Friday morning. The closing was expected in bank ing circles,'and is an echo of the First National Bank failure of last July. The two banks were closely affiliated, and the carrying down of the Gross bank was inevitable, although the president, E. C. Hamilton put up a hard fight to keep it going. The capitalization was $10,000 and the last statement showed over $93, 000 deposits, and loans of over $102, 000. PROF. RAY EMERSON WILL ATTEND UNIVERSITY (Allen News.) Allen people were disagreeably sur prised last week to learn that Prof. Emerson and wife, who have been members of our school faculty for the past three years, will not teach next year, as they plan to attend the state university at Lincoln. Prof, and Mrs. Emerson have been very able-instruct ors, the former’s very efficient man agement of the schools here will be greatly missed. Prof. Ray Emerson is a former Holt county resident. He made his home with his parents at Dorsey for a num ber of years and is quite well known in the east end of the county. WALLACE REID. (Grand Island Inddpendent.) The death of Wallace Reid, famous screen comedian, will cause a pang of regret in the heart of the country’s de votees of the film generallf, despite the ' ict that it has recently been revealed hat the use of drugs had much to do, ’ parently, with his untimely end. The man had some splendid ideals. His plays were always of a higher stand ard. There was neither the element of the silly buffoon about him nor of the playwright or player who attempts to gain applause by appealing to the vulgar. His position in the film world and in the hearts of theater goers was won on real merit. The exactions of his work, it appears, led him now and then, to the use of stimulating drugs. Habit formed. Bravely and de terminedly, the country has been given to understand, he attempted to shake it off. It had weakened his resistance and still he fought it. Few men, if any, are perfect and when they thus engage to combat their mistakes and their weaknesses, they merit approval and respect. Wallace Reid brought sunshine into the lives of millions without ever bringing filmland into any degree of disrepute.. PLEASANT VALLEY. Mr. Coopeb took two loads of hogs to O’Neill Friday. UNSHAKEN TESTIMONY Timejs the test of truth. And Doan’s Kidney Pills have stood the test in O’Neill. No O’Neill resident who suffers backache, or annoying uri nary ills can remain unconvinced by this twice-told testimony. Mrs. E. B. Jones, O’Neill, says: “I suffered with backache. While sitting still the trouble wasn’t so bad but when I went to get up I could hardly stand the sharp, knife-like pains. When I bent or walked around the misery was terrible. My kidneys were in a very disordered condition so I got Doan’s Kidney Pills and after using a couple boxes the trouble was all gone.” (Statement given June 21, 1916.) On June 14, 1920, Mrs. Jones said: “I think Doan’s Kidney Pills are a wonderful remedy. I gladly confirm my former statement in which I told what Doan’s had done for me.” Price 60c, at all dealers.
