Los Angeles Times: “Leonidas!’ J* exclaimed Mrs. Keekton, “are you aware that I was reading my essay on politics aloud to you?” “Yes, my dear.” “But you went to sleep.” “Why not? You removed everj problem so completely that I saw nc further reason for retaining persona] consciousness.” WHAT’S 15 MILLION TO THE BILLION WASTERS, ANYWAY? National Republican: Governoi Cox claims that the Republicans are raising a campaign fund aggregating in amount half as much as the Wilsor administration deliberately wasted ir the construction of one powder plan’ at Nitro, West Va. That plant cost sixty million dollars was worth probably thirty million dol lars, and sold for eight and a hal million dollars. The Wilson ad ministration paid a powder compan; over eleven million dollars for run ning the plant and got no powder i could use during the war. Governor Cox speaks in awe stricken tones of a campaign fund o: fifteen million dollars. Overlooking the fact that he multiplied the rea Republican national campaign fund bj four, still why should the Wilsor candidate for President be so frighten ed by a sum that is only a little mor< than one-eighth of what the Wilsor administration blew in on four nitrati plants that did not produce a pound oi nitrate during the war ? The waste or these plants is estimated at four time: the figure Governor Cox figures as the proposed Republican campaign func —and it was deliberate, crimina waste of other people’s money, mucl of it spent for political purposes. What’s a little matter of fifteen mil lion dollars, to the candidate of an ad ministration which let a hundred anc seventy-five million dollars worth o1 new automobiles stand exposed to the weather, with a consequent loss oi public money several times fifteen mil lions, and while this \vas going on long after the war ended, let contracts for a half million dollars’ worth of ad ditional automobiles ? What’s fifteen million dollars to the candidate for President of an ad ministration that charged off one fifteenth of that amount on two ships built for the war on account of monej spent for amusements, individual hote! bills, house dues, athletics, and othei such foolish frills of cost plus con tracting ? Fifteen million dollars is a mere bagatelle to the candidate for Presi dent of an administration which spen' seventy million dollars on a new train ing camp in a swamp near Norfolk Va., which had to be filled up with soi from the bottom of the ocean upoi which no grass will grow; and for the sodding of which $050,000 is now de manded. Fifteen million dollars is mereb small change for the presidential can dielate of an administration whicl spent fifteen millions on three can tonments in North Carolina, and aftei the war was over junked them all ant started in to spend fifteen million dol lars more on an entirely new canto ment. The Wilson administration wastet through inefficiency, graft, negligence and stupidity fully fifteen millions dol lars every other day during the war It spent several times fifteen millior dollars spreading poison propaganda in this country and throughout the world in behalf of Woodrow Wilson ism, and the taxpayers of America i A must foot the bill. If fifteen millions spent in refuting the “he kept us ou' of war” fallacy had beaten Wilson four years ago the people of the United States would have realized a profit of billions on the investment, besides sav ing their country from perils to its peace, prosperity and independence! The Wilson administration spent $116,000,000 for poison gas during the war, none of it reaching the battle front. Probably it is this left-over material that Goveronr Cox is using in his present campaign. Z_ PAID LOCALS. Paid announcements will ap pear under this head.
