SHERIFF IS ARRESTED
DRIVING WITHOUT LICENSE
Cedar County News: It was a case
of Turk meeting Turk when Sheriff
Dave McFadden entered the lists last
Friday against Sheriff Peter Duffy, of
Holt county, and the latter finally had
to acknowledge the authority of Mr.
McFadden and bow before the prow
ess of the local minion of the law,
and was compelled to obey the pro
visions made by the legislatores for
common people as well as for sheriffs.
But Sheriff Duffy was really not re
sponsible, as he was merely a guest of
Dr. Davie, a well known horseman,
whose car happened to be without a
license tag when it came under the
eagle eye of Sheriff McFadden who
promptly put it in storage in a local
garage. And when Sheriff Duffy was
ready to retm to O’Neill and tell the
boys out there what good races they
could expect this week he was unable
to find the fliver, in the spot where he
left it. Naturally he hunted up
Sheriff McFadden to report his loss
and seek expert aid in locating the
missing machine. Sheriff McFadden
quickly started his usual lecture about
the provisions of the automobile law
when Dr. Davis explained that he had
ordered his license at his home at
Fremont, and it Was to have been sent
fn him at. O’Neill, hut when he heard
of the good races to be seen here he
did not wait for it but came over at
once, bringing Sheriff Duffy along for
protection. Sheriff McFadden finally
relented and let the doughty repre
sentative of the law in Holt county
start home with the flivver.
BERG DOLL’S ESCAPE.
Camden (N. J.) Post-Telegram: Un
doubtedly there will be a popular de
mand that every agency and power of
the United States Government shall
be exercised to the limit to bring back
into custody, to serve his sentence, the
notorious draft dodger, Grover Cleve
land Bergdoll. His escape from his
mothers house in Philadelphia When
the public had reason to believe that
he was behind the bars at Fort Jay
besmirches high officials of the War
Department.
Whoever is responsible or in any
way implicated in this scandal should
be brought to book and punished.
Use of the Bergdoll millions to
shield the slacker and his fugitive
brother and consistently defy Federal
authority has marked this case from
the start. It was this that enabled the
convicted deserter to command au
thority for his transfer from his cell
to his mother’s home, where his get
away was doubtless cleverly planned.
The rottenness of this situation
calls for a Congressional investigation.
