EDITORIAL COMMENT.
Washington Post: Had the Paris
conference dealt in actualities and
provided against real and not theat
rical dangers, there would not now be
torpor in the United States and un
mitigated misery throughout Europe.
By this time the United States would
have amassed enough of its resources
to carry Europe over the abyss, and
Europe would now be cheerfully active
in rebuilding, instead of standing be
numbed and starving. The Paris con
ference dealt with a myth and not
with facts. It imagined that the
world needed an assurance that the
nations would not go to war, when the
truth was that the only nations bent
upon war had been disabled and^ould
be kept powerless with ease. The
failure of the victorious nations, led
by the United States, to establish an
actual and just peace—that is the real
reason for the aimlessness and incer
titude of the United States in dealing
with other nations. This virtual
paralysis must persist, necessarily, so
long as the government of the United
States mistakes the unreal for the
real.

Binghamton Press: Attorney Gen
eral Palmer told a Senate com
mittee that “the firm, strong
hand of the government” finally
had forced the striking miners to
yield. To that statement any citizen
who reads the papers and uses the
American language with vigor and
freectom will immediately answer—
“Bunk!”
When the miners finayy did yield it
was because the firm, strong hand of
the government was stretched out to
ward the pocketbook of the individual
coal consumer.
It did not need the testimony of Al
fred M. Ogle, chairman of the execu
tive committee of the operators, to
convince the public that the govern
men was afraid to fight it out on the
issue raised by the Federal Court in
junction.
There is no need to assume that the
government was trying to bluff the
miners. But there is certain no
reason now for letting the Attorney
General bluff the public.
New York Times: Mr. Bryan is
hallowed and endeared to his party by
more than his three so triumphant na
tional campaigns. In Nebraska he has
displayed his habitual skill and altru
ism in Democratic politics. Ne
braska has a Republican Governor, a
Legislature overwhelmingly Republi
can, a solid Republican delegation in
the House of Representative; and she
has re-elected her one Republican
Senator. With such good omens at
home, Mr. Bryan prepares to descend
upon Washington. On January 8,
sacred to Andrew Jackson, that Demo
cratic Prsident whom, in the opinion
of his admirers, Mr. Bryan so strik
ingly resembles, the Peerless Leader
is to utter the principles—of which no
body has a larger assortment—that
arise in him.
Fourteen months after the signing
of the armistice, the United States is
still technically at war with Germany,
due enirely to the determination of
President Wilson and his party sup
porters in the Senate to insist that the
Republican majority shall not be per
mitted to Americanize the treaty.
