    LOCAL MATTERS.
J. B. Stevans, residing northeast of
I age, died Tuesday morning after an
extended illness. The funeral will be
Thursday afternoon.
The redistricting and consolidation
c f rural schools continues to be the
1 rincipal business at the court house
and the main topic of interest to rural
residents. The proposed new districts
will be approximately twenty-five
square miles. Pupils will be trans
ported to and from the schools at the
expense of the districts.
Lieutenant Maynard, leader in the
transcontinental aeroplane race, broke
a crankshaft on his motor while near
Wahoo, on his return trip eastward,
Thursday noon. He has wired Wash
ington for permission to install in his
machine the motor of aother wrecked
plane. If permission is extended he
still has sufficient time to make the
change and beat the other contestants,
provided no further accidents occur.
President Wilson is reported as on
the road to recovery, but the true
nature of his illness has not been di
vulged as yet by the attending physi
cians, who content themselves with
non-enlightning bulletins issued daily.
The statement of Senator Moses that
the president is suffering from a
lesion of the brain has not been con
tradicted. All agree that it will be a
month or longer before the president
may resume active duty. In the mean
time cabinet officers are conducting the
affairs of their departments as though
< :. .. were the executive head of his
_ c a department.
Judge Dwyer Resigns.
The following article was taken
from the Anaconda (Mont.) Standard
of October 7th, and refers to a former
O’Neill man, a brother of Mrs. C. E.
Stout, of this city, and who for many
years resided here:
“John V. Dwyer has resigned his
position as one of the judges of the
district court of Silver Bow county, to
which he was elected in 1916, and in
which he has seen nearly three years’
service.
“Judge R. Jackson has resigned as
county attorney of Silver Bow county,
after a service of nearly three years,
and he has been selected by Governor
Stewart to succeed Judge Dwyer on
the district court bench.
“The changes are effective imme
diately following the official action of
the governor.
“Judge Dwyer has wanted to quit
the bench for some time and take up
again the active practice of the law.
He has, however, held ol? his resigna
tion at the request of friends until the
present time. When he began his
term on the bench in January of 1917,
he took charge of the criminal and
probate division of the court. In that
department he sat nearly two years,
and made a record for fairness and
hard work of which any one might
feel proud. When it was decided last
year to pass the criminal business
around among the three judges in
equal lengths of service for the 48
months’ terms, Judge Dwyer took
charge of his share of the civil busi
ness, the criminal and probate mat
ters going to Judge Lynch.
“Before going on the district bench,
Judge Dwyer had served a term as
chief deputy county attorney, resign
ing toward the end of his time to rep
resent Silver Bow county in the lower
house of the legislature. Later he
served as city attorney of Butte. He
was elected judge while still city at
torney, and quit before the end of his
term to go on the bench. In every
public capacity in which he has served
he has made a splendid showing, and
leaves the bench with the conscious
ness of duty well performed, and the
good will of fhe attorneys with whom
he had been thrown in contact.”
