LOCAL MATTERS. M. S. Conover, of Stuart, came down this morning to take in the Holt county fair. This office acknowledges a pleasant call. Mike O’Keefe came up from Sioux City last Wednesday evening to spend a day visiting relatives and friends and taking in the Holt county fair. Mrs. MJichael O'Keefe, of Sioux City, Iowa, has been in the city the past week visiting at th^ home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McCafferty. Miss Mary Waters, of Jackson, for merly a teacher in the public schools here, arrived in the city last Wednes day evening to spend a few days visit ing friends. Mrs. Ben Harty and brother, Francis Mullen, left for Omaha this morning where Mrs. Harty will visit friends for a few days and Francis will enter Creighton college. Carl B. McAndrew, of Ainsworth, and Miss Alberta G. White, of Bas sett, were granted a marriage license by County Judge Malone last Wed nesday. Mrs. R. R. Dickson and daughter, Miss Marjorie, returned last Monday evening from a short visit to Omaha, While in the metropolis they heard President Wilson at the auditorium last Monday morning, where he de livered an address appealing for sup port of the League of Nations Cove nant. W. K. Hodgkin came down from Sidney, Nebraska, last Friday and has been busy the past few days packing his household goods, preparatory to . his removal to that city. They expect to leave for their new home the latter part of the week. Their many O’Neill friends wish them happiness and pros perity in their new home. The Sixth Annual Exhibit of the Holt County Agricultural Association opened yesterday. The exhibits are fine and the display of live stock very good. The attendance on the opening day was very good, but the crowds in town today indicate that the attend ance this afternoon will break all records in point of attendance. Lieutenant Edwin Stratton came down from Atkinson last Friday afternoon and remained here Friday and Saturday taking up for a ride those who could produce the necces sary fee of $15. Several of our citi zens took advantage of the opportu nity to visit the clouds and all who took the ride say they enjoyed them selves immensely. Mr. and Mrs. William Myers, of Hinkley, Illinois, arrived in the city Wednesday evening for a few weeks visit with relatives and old friends. Mr. and Mrs. Myers were residents of this county for several years, removing to Illinois about four years ago, but this still took upon O’Neill as their home and are always glad to get back to the old town. Mr. Myers says that he has decided to dispose of his land in Illinois and come back to good old Holt to live as he says no spot on earth looks as good to him as Holt county in the vicinity of O'Neill. Fire, starting from the engine of a Ford car, caused a $2,000 loss to Michael Froelich last Wednesday evening. Mr. Froelich had just rei turned from a trip to Burwell. He had put the car in the garage, at his place in the southeastern part of town, and was closing up the place when he noticed a light under the car and in a few moments the car was a blaze. The flames spread so rapidly that he was unable to get the car out of the shed and it was destroyed. In addi tion to the car his garage, a buggy, saddle, sleigh and considerable per sonal property was destroyed. There was no insurance. Last Monday C. H. Cooper pur chased of J. A. Brown the O’Neill News & Cigar Store, taking pos session Tuesday morning. Mr. Brown retains the Western Union office and will give his attention to that business and the promoting of several oil com panies that he has become financially interested in. Mr. Brown came here six years ago, shortly after the Golden hotel had opened for business, rented the comer room and opened a cigar, confectionary and news stand and has made a success of the busi ness and only sold because he could not give the business the attention that it required. Mr. Cooper will give his entire attention to the operation of the store and will be assisted in the management by his son, Ted. The Salvation Army is concluding preparations for a drive for funds to be used in connection with their work among the poor and unfortunate in the state of Nebraska. No money is to be spent outside of the state. It is to be exclusively used for Home Ser vice. In connection with the organiza tion of the soldiers, sailors and ma rines of the county to assist in this drive, Judge R. R. Dickson, Frank Harnish, Frank O’Donnell, Wm.O’Sul livan and J. D. Cronin went up to At kinson, Stuart and Emmett last Tues day. Ross Harris, of Emmett, Dr. N. P. McKee, of Atkinson, and Bert Flannigan, of Stuart, were selected as Chairmen in their respective locali ties. A trip through the eastern part Of the county is contemplated the latter part of the week. Colman-Downey. Married, at the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Downey, in this city last Thursday evening at 8 o’clock, Miss Mildred Downey of this city to Walter J. Colman of Inman, the ceremony be ing performed by Rev. M. J. Brown, Episcopalian minister of Neligh, in the presence of a few of the intimate friends and the relatives of the con tracting parties. i i ....... jfii'aMnwVifi ■■■■■■ A splendid wedding dinner was served immediately after the cere mony, and Mr. and Mrs. Coleman left that evening for a wedding tour through the Black Hills. They will made their home at Valentine. The following relatives of the contracting parties were present at the ceremony: Mr. and Mrs. James Colman, parents of the groom; Mr. and Mrs. George Colman; Mr .and Mrs. Frank Colman and Miss Mary Colman, of Inmna; Mr. and Mrs. L. She is an accomplished and affable young lady who has a host of friends in this city and county. For the past few years she has been one of Holt county’s most efficient teachers, being one of the instructors in the Inman public schools. ' The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Colman, pioneer settlers of Inman, and is also a native of the county. He is an ambitious and in dustrious young man who has a host of friends in this city and the eastern part of the county. Since his dis charge from the army several months ago he has been traveling through this territory as a- representative of an eastern oil company. The Frontier joins the many friends of this young couple in wishing them many years of happiness and pros perity. Overturning Car Injures Arthur Ellis. Arthur Ellis, of Dorsey, suffered a fractured rib, skinned shins and severe bruises about the face and body Thursday in an auto accident while enroute from Dorsey to the fair. The accident occured a mile east and a mile north of the fair grounds when the car Mr. Ellis was driving attempt ed to pass another car and turned over. With lV^r. Ellis were Elza Wiley, Wil lard Smith and Peter Spence. The occupants of the car were pinned be neath it as it turned over but aside from Mr..Ellis suffered no serious in juries.
