He re ceived a summons to appear before the president. “Sir, I am informed that you have a barrel of ale in your room,” said the latter. “Yes, sir.” “What explanation can you make?” “Why, the fact is, sir, my physician advises me to try a little each day as a tonic, and not wishing to go to the various places where the beverage is retailed T arranged to have a bar rel in my room." “Indeed! And have you derived any benefit from the use of it?” “Oh, yes, sir. When the barrel was first taken to my room I could scarcely lift it. Now I can carry it easily.— Pittsburg Chronicle-Telegraph. So Hubby’s Ruse Failed. Hubby hau been celebrating and arrived home in the small hours feel ing rather dubious of his reception. Absolute stillness reigned, however, and with a load off his mind he hur ried, shoeless, to the cradle and com menced rocking it energetically with the air of a man who had been at his post for hours. “What are you doing there,James?” queried his strong-minded spouse, awakened “I’ve been sitting here nearly two hours trying to get baby to sleep!” he growled in return. “That’s strange,” remarked his wife. “Baby is here in bed with me.— London Answers. Ordering a Dinner. A stylishly dressed woman entered the restaurant. The waiter handed her a bill of fare written in French and said: “Please mark off the dishes you wish to order.” Could a woman dressed in the heighth of fashion confess that she was unable to read French? Taking the pencil, she made a few dashes and the order read: “Dinner, $1.00. June J 20. Vegetables. Please pay at the desk. No tips.” The waiter brought her a dinner of steak and potatoes. — Pittsburg Chronicle-Telegraph. Spelling Oddities. An American in London was intro duced to an Englishman who said: “Why, no introduction is necessary; you and I have had a lot of corres pondence.” “I beg pardon,” said the Yankee. “What was the name?” “Chumley.” “Chumley?” “Yes, J. Evelyn Chumley—C-H-O L-M-O-NDELE Y.” "THE NEW-NEBRASKA FEDERATION" You are solicited and urged to be come a member of the Federa tion: WHY? Because it is the only body of mjB in the state standing together in defense of all the people—high or low—and of ALL PROPERTY— big and little—and against all "class” legislation and all state socialism, in the framing of a NEW CONSTITUTION for Ne braska. ' AND— Because it must be supported by the interest and contributions of the every-day plain people to live and continue the battle. It has no “endowment” on which to rely. Numbers have already shown their appreciation of the work the Federation has undertaken by taking a membership and con tributing. WHY NOT YOU? Whether you have a home, a farm, a job, a shop, a store or a profes sion, you are vitally interested in a square deal for all as against ad vantage to be given to any “class” of the people.
