    The Race Meet.
. The race meet held in this city last
^ V™ h’i iduy and Saturday was one of the
greatest racing events ever held in
-his state and those who missed the
c\ onto missed seeing some of the
finest racing ever pulled off in any
city in any state in the union. There
have been race meets held in some of
the larger cities in which larger
purses were offered but they had no
better races nor were there any better
horses entered. The horses that were
here for the event were the best run
n^.yg horses in the country and many
of them had raced in some of the great
I races held in the east and south last
year and the year before. The horse
that won the mile derby $1,000 purse
at Des Moines last year was here and
was fn entry in the mile derby, but
had to be content with second place,
being defeated for the purse by Min
nie B after one of the greatest races
ever seen on any track. Old tace
horse men say that there was the
finest bunch of running horses here
that they had ever seen on any track
in the country.
There was fifty-four head of horses
here and lovers of good horsees were
given a rare treat as they were as
fine looking a bunch as any one would
! , wish to look at. Horses that won
' good purses in races in Cuba, Chili
ana New urieans were enterea in tne
races here and in many of the events
had to be content with second place
or worse. One thing that was quite
noticable was that the favorite was
defeated more times than it won. In
h j Friday’s races out of seven events the
fc *1"*1 lliCorite came under the wire first in
but two events, showing that all the
horses were in the race to win.
The races were also a financial suc
cess the promoters taking in enough
money at the gate to pay all expenses.
The success of this event has been
such that the racing lovers in this city
are figuring on making the running
race meet an annual event and
it is certain that if they can secure
as good a bunch of horses as were on
the track this year that the events
will be successful as everyone who
witnessed the rac&s this year will be
a booster for the next me'et.
