Berry, O’Neill, Neb. 20-4 Jordan-Dimmitt Block Burns. Fire, starting from kindling and trash around the furnace, destroyed the Jordan Hardware block Friday night, and the conflagration also car ried with it the connecting store and office building of E. A. Dimmitt. The loss, which is total, will aggregate about $35,000, with total insurance of $29,500, on the stocks and fixtures. The fire was discovered early Fri day evening by C. W. Sparger, who had gone into the basement of the Jordan hardware store and who at once notified Mr. Dimmitt, at work in the grocery store. When Dimmitt, armed with a fire extinguisher, de scended into the basement, the smoke and gases were so thick as to prevent his getting at the flames and he and Sparger were driven to the floors above. The flames soon communi cated to the stock of goods in the basement and spread from there to the basement of the Dimmitt struct-, ure through a connecting doorway. Because of the dense smoke the fire department, early on the scene, was unable to get directly at the fire and it soon burned through the first floor into the hardware. From there it rapidly spread to the grocery and both grocery and hardware buildings with their stocks were totally destroyed. By heroic work the department managed to keep the flames almost entirely confined to the two buildings, but finally they broke through by way of the roof to the Jordan furniture store adjoining. From the roof the flames gradually ate their way down ward through the offices and living apartments on the second floor to the furniture salesroom, destroying the stock. O’Neill, : : Nebraska t ture store were left, partially intact, and all day Saturday the fire con tinued to smoulder in the basements of the wrecked buildings. A high north wind prevailed at the time of the fire and for a time the ; leaping flames threatened to jump i across the street to the south. Only .the most heroic work on the part of j the fire boys prevented this and also ; its spread to the Davison harness shop and the Warner stores to the east. A touch of the dramatic was added to the conflagration by the explosion of oils stored in the basement of the burning building and the popping of thousands of shotgun and rifle shells discharged by the terriffic heat. The buildings destroyed were the newest and among the most modern business structures of the city, having been erected by Mr. Jordan and Mr. Dimmit two years ago. The Jor dan buildings were insured for $11, 900 and the Dimmitt building for $6,000. Mr. Jordan carried $8,400 in surance on his stock and Mr. Dimmitt $3,200. Other tenants of the building to lose effects in the fire were Dr. Bur gess, dentist, Hugh J. Boyle, county attorney, McMillan & Markey, who occupied residence apartments in the building, Dr. Frost, who officed and resided in the building, and several others. Most of the office fixtures were destroyed, but much of the furni ture in the living apartment was saved. Mr. Jordan and Mr. Dimmitt both are undecided as to the time of re sumption of business, if at all, and no definite conclusion will be arrived at until after adjustment with the in surance companies. CAN’T DO THE WORK It’s too much to try to work every day against a constant, dull backache, or sudden darting pain in the small of the back. Be rid of it. Try Doan’s Kidney Pills. Your neighbors recom mend them. Mrs. Byron Parker, O’Neill, says: “I have used Doan’s Kidney Pills off and on for years and they have done me a lot of good. I take them when I get attacks of backache, which come on from overwork. Sometimes my back has been so sore and lame and has pained so terribly, I couldn’t move another step. Lincoln, Nov. 6.—(Special to Omaha Bee.)—With the smoke of battle stiii over the battle ground, democrats at the state house are taking their defeat in a sportmanlike manner. Governor Neville has shown himself to be a good loser and today sent to his op ponent the following characteristic letter of congratulations: “Dear Mac: Shortly after the re turns began to come in, I was seized with a suspicion which quickly grew into a conviction, that congratulations were very much in order. I therefore hasten to tender my heartiest con gratulations upon your election as governor of Nebraska. “Defeated candidates, like the prize fighters of old, should be well pro vided with alibis. I have none. I am not even disturbed by the thought that the ship of state is going headlong on the rocks. In my last yqar at college, we had the greatest foot ball team the institution had ever enjoyed. None of us who were leaving thought that it could ever be equaled. The next year they had a better one. “I have always been impressed with the philosophy that life is just one thing after another. “Wyth best wishes for a successful administration, I am (the dear old State Journal to the contrary notwith standing), Your war governor, “KEITH NEVILLE.” Modern Housewife. “Can she bake a cherry pie?” “Sure.
