Brown, Prop. Sanitary Meat Market “Say, John, this is Tuesday night don’t forget the beef steak!” Prone 150. O’Neill, Nebr. ot^er” By REV. L. J. LEWIS, of Seward. When God first brought the crowning piece of his workmanship to Adam to see what he would call her, he said “ISHA/’^maness, woman, expressing the same idea that was lately expressed by Kip ling as “the female of the species.” This was not only the first idea of Adam concerning woman, but doubtless of all primative men. As Adam advanced in his knowledge of things, he soon camtf to the conclusion that another word as vastly more appropriate for desig nating his wife, and consequently called her no more “ISHA,” maness, but “EVE” mother. Again we observe that as primative man has advanced in knowledge and exalted to the highest place his vocabu lary. So today we unhesitatingly say that the word is the dearest of all words that relate to human relationships. It is equally dear when heard from the lips of a prattling child, the husband using it as a term of endearment in speaking to his wife, or of the mature person who speaks of her who bore him with the same reverence he uses in speaking of his God. We can conceive of nothing more fitting than that we should'join in a service in her honor in crowning her this day as “Queen of May.” If we shall succeed this hour in making the mothers realize that they are loved and appreciated as they should be, we will be truly worship ing and serving Him who has commanded that we honor our fathers and mothers. We recently read a list of things that men consider the world’s greatest need at the present time. Among those things was “A Settlement of the Question of the Relation of Capital and Labor.” “An Equitable System of Taxation,” “Arbit ation of All International Questions,” and “World Peace.” The.-e are undoubtedly great issues and the settlement of one or all these questions would most certainly be a great blessing to humanity; but is the consideration of these things of greater importance tharr other things ? Are we not in danger of overlooking or ignoring one of the most potent influences for good in the world—a mother’s? I insist that this' is not only a re ligious question but that it should be a national issue as well. One of our ex-presidents spoke profoundest truth in these words: “When all is said it is the mother, and the mother only, who is a better citizen than the soldier. The successful mother, the mother who does her part in rearing and training aright the boys and girls who are to be the men and women of the next generation is of greater use to the community and occupies, if she would only realize it, a more honorable as well as important position than any successful man in it. The mother is the one supreme asset of national life; she is more important by far than the successful statesman, business man, artist or scientist.” This same thought was expressed by Napoleon who said: “France needs nothing so much to promote her regen eration as good mothers.” Napoleon knew whereof he spoke, for A he had just such a mother; and he repeatedly declared that the family were indebted to her for that physical, intellectual, and moral train ing which prepared them to ascend the lofty summit of power to which they finally attained. Almost without exception it is possible to thus find a good mother back of every man who has impressed himself on any nation. Mighty is the force of motherhood, it transforms all things, it turns timidity into courage; defiance into submission; thoughtlessness into foresight; anxiety into cairn content; selfish ness into self denial, and vanity into love,” so writes George Elliott and if motherhood thus changes the mother for 'the better we see at once why the children of such mothers are likewise made the better. Emerson comes out in strongest teriqs in saying that “all men are what their mothers made them.” Sometimes we find men in the zenith of their fame referred to as “a self made man” or as a (Continued on page four) Fitzsimmons Millinery Store Have a nice line of White Hats on Display, Special Sale now on, on all Colored Hats and Trim mings, If you are in need of a hat, at reduced prices, now is the time to buy.
