Death of Thomas Naughton.
Thomas Naughton died at the home
of his parents northwest of this city
last Tuesday evening after an illness
of several months, of heart disease, at
the age of thirty-three years and
three months. The body will be taken
to Omaha on the early train Friday
morning for interment, and funeral
services will be held at St. Mary Mag
deline’s church in Omaha, Friday.
Deceased was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas Naughton pioneer resi
dents of this county. He was a native,
born on August 18, 1884, and spent
most of his life in this county, except
a few years in California. He has
been afflicted with heart trouble for
several years and the affliction kept
sapping his vitality and for the past
month he had been confined to his bed.
He was a quiet, unasuming young
man and had many friends in this
vicinity who will regret to learn of his
death.
The Frontier joins the many friends
of the family in tendering condolences
in their hour of sorrow.
Holt County Raises $4,103.00 For
Y. M. C. A. Fund.
The quota for Holt County during
the recent campaign for Y. M. C. A.
funds was $2,500.00. The committees
everywhere from the different towns
met with.good success.
The most difficult work was to see
those living in the country and the
several committees are entitled to
great credit for the work they did in
this direction. It was only a matter
of being able to see people in the
county, however, to get their sub
scription^. At one sale in the north
eastern part of the county one com
mittee from O’Neill obtained $130.00
in a very short time, in fact, it kept
them busy putting down the sub
scriptions and taking the money.
About $125.00 was subscribed from
the Blackbird neighborhood, $72.00 of
this being raised in a few minutes at
Sunday School at Marquette Chapel.
________
Other commttees were equally suc
cessful wherever they went but we do i
not have the exact figures. At Inman
they raised over $300.00 and more
than their quota in one day. All the
districts of the county more than sub
scribed their quota, with the exception
of Emmet and Page, at which places
they were late in getting started or
their amounts would have been over
subscribed the same as other places,
for it was just a lack of being able to
see the people in the short time that
they had to work.
The amounts raised in the various
districts of the county are as follows:
Stuart . $452.00
Atkinson . 965.25
Emmet . 115.75
Inman . 355.25
Ewing . 422.00
Page . 218.75
Chambers . 258.00
O’Neill . 1,316.00
Total . $4,103.00
MORE LOCAL MATTERS.
H. J. Birmingham, who has been at
tending the officers training camp at
Fort Snelling the past three months,
was given a second lieutenant’s com
mission in the officers reserve. He
will probably be called to the colors
as soon as the next draft army is
mobilized. John H. Hopkins, formerly
of this city, won a first lietttenant’s
commission at the same camp. He
will probably be assigned to duty at
once. O’Neill boys always make good
when put to the test.
The O’Neill foot ball team went to
Neligh last Friday and returned the
same night defeated by a score of
27 to 0. The O’Neill team has not
hit its stride so far this year,
but they are recruiting a few
men to play with them next
Thursday, when they meet the Venus
warriors on , the home Gridiron.
This will be a good game and the
people should encourage the team
with their presence on the grounds
Thanksgiving afternoon.
E. O. Root and daughter, of Oxford
Junction, Iowa, were in the city last
week visiting old time friends. Mr.
Root was, for a number of years, a
resident of this county living near In
man, but moved to Iowa some six
years ago. He was visiting his sister,
Mrs. Bradley, who lives near Inman.
Gerald Miles, eldest son of G. A.
Miles of the Holt County Independent,
has been appointed a deputy revenue
collector for this district. The war
tax has greatly increased the work of
the revenue collector’s office and he
was compelled to get more deputies to
perform the work. Gerald is an
energetic young fellow and will make
good in the position. The Frontier
tenders congratulations.
A couple of weeks ago the old
Hodgkin ranch, twelve miles north
and six miles east of this city, was
sold to James Blair, of Wayne, Neb.,
the deal having been closed last
week. The ranch contains 1680 acres
and is one of the best improved
ranches in the county. The price paid
was $42,000.00, or $25 per acre. Hiram
Hodgkin, father of W. K. Hodgkin,
settled on the Red Bird in 1879, where
he lived up to the time of his death
several years ago. His original home
stead is part of the ranch property
and is one of the best farms in that
section of the county. Mr. Blair will
take charge of the property next
March and it will be occupied by his
son. Ernest Beaver is now living on
the place but he has not decided what
he will do in the future, but he will
probably purchase a farm in north
eastern Holt, where he has resided for
so many years.
