It is well to set apart a day in the year as a time for remembrance; a day when we can think of patriotism, heroism and sacrifice, and
fearless, unquestioning devotion to duty; when we can remember, pay tribute to and decorate the graves of the brave men of the north and
the south who gave their lives for the cause they believed just.
The differences for which they battled have disappeared. We now have no north or south but a united country; one flag, one cause
and one people. Our Memorial is no longer for the cause; it celebrates the courage. We may formally decorate their graves or not; the
true patriotism is in the hearts of the men, women and children wh<j now share the heritage of a united and free country that the heroism
and self-sacrifice of these men left us.
Today the men of the nation are organizing for National Defense; every county and state in this Union will be organized for the pro
tection of the home and the rights of the home and the rights of our citizenship—not only for the protection and defense of this country
but to assist in feeding the thousands who are starving in war-trodden Europe. Preparedness and National Defense will enable this
country to maintain its proud station as one of the leading nations of the world. It is a duty we owe ourselves as well as our country to
do our utmost to assist in conserving the resources of this magnificent country of ours.
You may not see what this has to do with the clothing business; there is no particular field for heroism in such work. We don’t have
* to “lay down our lives” selling clothes. But we have the same sort of spirit in it; a willingness to do all we can to conserve the resources,
financial and otherwise, of our customers, and can give them better values for their money than can be found in any other store in this
section of the state.
The European war has caused great disturbances in the woolen martet, the dye stuffs market, etc. Prices have been unsettled;
some weavers, manufacturers of clothing and sellers of textiles, have considered it wise to send out notices of warning to the effect that
dyes are uncertain and cannot be guaranteed; that all wool fabrics are difficult to obtain, and other similar things. Our clothes will con
tinue to be, as in the past, absolutely all wool; our colors will be, as in the past, absolutely fast and reyable. We shall continue to sell our
merchandise, as in the past, at prices that are to the advantage of our patrons. We have our usual supply of goods to meet your require
