AN OLD TIMER WRITES.
Tells a Few Stories About Old Times
and Gives His Opinion on Cur
rent Events.
(Continued from last week.)
The grass grown mounds scattered
over the prairie, and on the manj
hill points show where they are now
and their places are filled by a
different sort of men and women.
The old timer passing along wher«
once rushed out the whole family tc
says “What is your name please?” anc
welcome him, now finds a stranger whc
if a fellow who has been a mixer don’1
feel lonesome, it is funny. He wil\ feel
like the man who went to heaven and
could not find William Lord Garrison
and said “Well, put me with William
Lord Garrison, I can enjoy myself
better with him there, that 1 can here
in this kind of company.
Those old times made men friends
and altho’ they might quarrel lover
politics, and anything else, don’t you
know when a fellow has one o fthem
as an assistant now, in any kind of
undertaking, no matter what, whether
converting the heathen, or rebuking
the hypocrite, electing a friend or de
feating an enemy, he kind of likes to
pull up long side some old fellow who
has stood the test in years gone by.
Yes, from the mouth of the Elkhorn,
of the Niobrara and along the Mis
souri, almost to their source was seen
the early frontiers man coming to
O’Neill, and when we remember the men
who settled around it and collected
around Hagerty’s Store, we stop and
think what a grand old race they
were. On the hill in both cemetaries
there are many of them laid to rest,
and a few still walk the paths whose
feet first trod the waving grass from
the same paths they now tread, with
step less blithe, but when we think of
what they have endured in the “Days
of al’ lang sine” we have a feeling that
ere long the few who remain will say
in the words of the poet, “They’re
gone away, and can’t return, those
friends of boyhood years.” R. H. Z.
